Who Are This Year’s WNBA MVP Favorites?
Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx
Collier has been a productive player since entering the league in 2019, but she has a firm place as one of the best of the best after averaging 20+ PPG and 8+ RPG in both 2023 and 2024.
Her 2023 success was largely for naught as the Lynx had a second consecutive losing season, but her outstanding 2024 (20.4 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 3.4 APG) helped Minnesota return to the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2017.
Collier has been even better this season, and the only thing that might keep her from being named WNBA MVP for the first time is a sprained ankle that she suffered on August 2. If she returns from that in a timely manner, she should remain ahead of the other contenders.
Alyssa Thomas, Phoenix Mercury
Thomas has been one of the WNBA’s best players for some time now, but her first season in Phoenix could be a crowning campaign for her.
Entering this season, Thomas’s career high in scoring was 15.5 points per game, but she is on pace to surpass that. She is also on pace to smash her previous best in assists, and she has once again been a beast on the boards.
In the process, she recently became the first player in WNBA history to record three consecutive triple-doubles, and with fiancée Dewanna Bonner alongside her again, the Mercury are poised for a postseason run.
A’ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces
Last season, Wilson set a WNBA single season record for scoring average (26.9 PPG), averaged 11.9 RPG, led the league in blocks per game (2.6 BPG), and averaged a career high in steals (1.8 SPG).
Whether it is NBA MVP, the Heisman Trophy, or the MLB MVP awards, voters can be fatigued by continued excellence and embrace giving someone else the spotlight. That arguably played out in last season’s NFL MVP race, which saw Josh Allen edge Lamar Jackson in a controversial vote.
That fatigue likely won’t come into play this season for Wilson, not because of her own performances but more because the Aces have not fared well as a team and Collier and Thomas have separated themselves from the pack. Still, she is putting together another strong season, which has helped the two-time WNBA champions stay afloat.
