Who Are This Season’s WNBA Championship Favorites?

Minnesota Lynx

Last season, the Lynx came agonizingly close to becoming the first WNBA franchise with five championships. However, they couldn’t close the deal in the final seconds of regulation in Game 5 against the Liberty, who forced overtime and went on to celebrate their first title.

But it was a return to form for Minnesota following consecutive losing campaigns, and they have been the league’s best team this season.

There are two big reasons for that. One is head coach Cheryl Reeve, arguably the best coach in WNBA history. The other is WNBA MVP favorite Napheesa Collier. Last season, Collier averaged 20.4 PPG and posted career highs in rebounds (9.7 RPG) and assists (3.4 APG), and she averaged 23.8 PPG, 8.9 RPG, and 3.3 APG in Minnesota’s postseason run. This season, her offensive game has gone to a new level, and some individual and team hardware could be the end result.

In addition to their superstar coach and player, the Lynx have a strong supporting cast. Kayla McBride, Courtney Williams, Alanna Smith all played key roles last season and are doing so again, and the addition of DiJonai Carrington before the trade deadline could prove to be key come September and October.

New York Liberty

Now that the Liberty, who played in the very first WNBA championship game in 1997, finally have a title, will a second follow quickly?

A repeat run will come without veteran wing Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, a key part of last season’s title trek. Hamilton suffered a meniscus injury while playing in the new Unrivaled league and will be sidelined for the entire season after undergoing surgery in March.

However, the Liberty bolstered their squad in a big way in the offseason with the free agency signing of former Mystics and Mercury guard Natasha Cloud. Cloud is one of the best point guards in the league and has been an impactful player on both ends of the court for New York.

Even without Laney-Hamilton, the Liberty have a strong core again this season, with Cloud joining forces with two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart, 2024 WNBA Finals MVP Jonquel Jones, and four-time WNBA All-Star Sabrina Ionescu.

Phoenix Mercury

Phoenix said goodbye to Diana Taurasi (retired) and Brittney Griner (signed with the Atlanta Dream in free agency), but some big moves have them back in the championship conversation after three straight losing seasons.

In the offseason, they traded for Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally, who have formed a tremendous trio with four-time WNBA All-Star Kahleah Copper. And in July, Phoenix signed DeWanna Bonner, who reunited with fiancée Thomas (and the organization where she spent her first 10 WNBA seasons) after a failed stint with the Fever.

Indiana Fever

Entering last season, the goal for the Fever was to improve and potentially reach the WNBA playoffs for the first time since 2016.

After overcoming a slow start to reach the postseason, expectations are in a different stratosphere for the Fever this season.

It all starts with Clark, who averaged 19.2 PPG, 8.4 APG, and 5.7 RPG as a rookie, but in any sport, stars must be surrounded with the right cast to compete for a championship. With Clark, Bonner, Howard, and stalwarts Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston, the Fever have a starting five that can win a lot of games. But will it live up to the lofty expectations?

Atlanta Dream

Entering this season, the Dream, who were 15-25 in 2024, were expected to be a much improved team. And they have been just that, thanks in large part to a career season by Allisha Gray.

Gray’s leap to becoming a potential WNBA MVP candidate has been part of a big offensive improvement for the Dream. Last season, they were dead last in the league in scoring, averaging only 77 points per game. This season, they have been one of the league’s better offensive teams, and it has paid off in what will be the franchise’s first winning season since 2018, barring a late collapse.

Las Vegas Aces

Winning three consecutive championships is a rare feat in any of North America’s major professional sports leagues, and the chase got the best of the Aces.

Whether it was the distraction of the Olympic year, the stress of trying to three-peat, or internal factors, the Aces were not their best selves for much of the 2024 season. And after finishing fourth in the league standings, they were knocked out by the Liberty in the conference finals.

Swapping out Kelsey Plum for Jewell Loyd was done to try to refresh the team, but it has not worked out as hoped, and this has been another disappointing season to date. But there are signs of progress, and with A’ja Wilson having another exceptional season, you can’t count out a team with this level of top-end talent.

2025 WNBA Championship Information

The 2025 WNBA regular season will be played from Friday, May 16 to Thursday, September 11.

The 2025 WNBA playoffs will feature the top eight teams in the final WNBA regular season standings. While the league consists of two conferences, the Eastern Conference and Western Conference, conference affiliation does not factor into playoff spots and seeding.

The first round of the playoffs will consist of four best-of-three series (which are moving to a 1-1-1 format), with the winners moving onto the conference finals, which will be two best-of-five series (2-2-1 format).

This year, the WNBA Finals will be a best-of-seven series for the first time. Like the NBA Finals, it will be played in a 2-2-1-1-1 format. This means that the higher-seeded team will host Games 1, 2, 5 (if necessary), and 7 (if necessary), while the lower-seeded team will host Games 3, 4, and 6 (if necessary).
