Types of NHL Odds
There are several different types of NHL odds available at sports betting sites like BetOnline, which offers a wide variety of hockey betting options. On this page, however, you will find only three types of odds: moneyline odds, puck line (spread) odds, and total (over/under) odds.
Moneyline and Puck Line Odds
In sports betting, moneyline and point spread odds are also known as sides. Sides involve betting on the outcome of a game.
The point spread can be known by other terms depending on the sport. For example, in baseball, the spread is known as the run line. In hockey, the spread is known as the puck line.
What is the chief difference between moneyline and puck line betting?
With moneyline betting, you are betting solely on who you think will win. If you are betting on puck line odds, you are either betting on the favorite to win by at least a certain number of goals or for the underdog to win outright or lose by fewer than a certain number of goals.
As with MLB run line betting, most NHL puck lines are -1.5 (for the favorite)/+1.5 (for the underdog). In that instance, the favorite must win by two or more goals to cover the puck line. On the other side, the underdog must either win outright or lose by no more than one goal.
There is one notable thing to keep in mind with NHL puck line betting. If the game goes into overtime, puck line bets have already been decided when regulation ends.
Why is that the case? A team can’t win by more than one goal in overtime or a shootout. So, if you bet on the underdog to cover the +1.5 and they force overtime, you already have a winner in the books if they lose in overtime or a shootout.
Total (a.k.a. Over/Under) Odds
If you are betting on NHL over/under odds, you are betting on how many combined goals will be scored no matter the outcome.
So, what does it mean if the listed total for a matchup between the Penguins and Flyers is 6.5 goals? If you bet on over 6.5 goals, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia must score seven or more goals. If you bet on under 6.5 goals, the two teams must score six or fewer goals.
So, if the Penguins defeat the Flyers 5-3, over 6.5 bets will win. But if the Penguins defeat the Flyers 4-2, under 6.5 bets will win.
Other Types of NHL Odds
In addition to the types of NHL odds you can find on this page, there are other types of NHL bets available at many online sportsbooks.
Those types of bets include prop bets and futures bets. Player prop odds are the most popular type of props, but there are also game and team props. Futures odds include Stanley Cup winner odds and odds for NHL awards such as the Art Ross Trophy (NHL scoring leader), Hart Trophy (NHL Most Valuable Player), and Calder Trophy (NHL Rookie of the Year).
Comparing NHL Odds
So, why is comparing NHL odds useful for sports bettors? Through comparing odds, also known as line shopping, bettors can find the best betting value for a particular line.
This page features odds from multiple reputable sportsbooks all in one place. Therefore, there is no need to take the time to check sportsbooks individually unless you just want to do so.
Why is finding the best betting value important? Getting the best odds may not mean so much for a single bet, but finding those edges adds up quickly if you bet regularly.
What Factors Can Affect NHL Odds?
Numerous factors can affect NHL odds. Like other sports, injuries and suspensions can affect odds. Rest advantages and disadvantages can also be impactful.
Form can be a factor as well. Consider a potential matchup between the Vegas Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks, with the Sharks as the home team.
Entering the matchup, the Golden Knights sit atop the Pacific Division, while the Sharks sit at the bottom of the Pacific Division. If the Sharks have been hot recently, they may be seen as less of an underdog than they may have been otherwise, even with the teams many points apart in the division.
Also, while the impact doesn’t match the impact of pitching matchups on MLB betting, goalie matchups can also have an influence on NHL odds. If the backup is starting and there is a significant gap between the regular starter and the backup, the odds won’t be the same as they would be if the regular starter was between the pipes.
