Who Are This Year’s NBA Finals MVP Favorites?
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder
Over the course of NBA history, only 14 players have been named NBA MVP and went on to win the Finals in that same season.
In the NBA Finals MVP era, only 10 players have done the NBA MVP and NBA Finals MVP double in the same season.

All of those retired players are in the Hall of Fame, as are the three former players who were named NBA MVP and won the Finals in the same season pre-NBA Finals MVP era (Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, and Wilt Chamberlain). LeBron will join them following his retirement in 2037, and Stephen Curry, the only other player to be named MVP and win the Finals in the same season, will as well.
So, SGA will be among legends if he even is just on the winning team in this series, but he will be in even more exclusive company if he produces an NBA Finals MVP-winning performance.
After claiming his first NBA scoring title with his third straight 30+ PPG season, as well as registering a career high in assists, SGA has averaged 29.8 PPG, 6.9 APG, and 5.7 RPG in 16 playoff games. In the Western Conference finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves, he scored 30+ points four times in five games and averaged 31.4 PPG, 8.2 APG, and 5.2 RPG for the series on the way to being named MVP of the series.
If the Thunder do complete their dominant season with a championship, it’s hard to see anyone other than SGA earning NBA Finals MVP honors, which is why he is so heavily favored.
Tyrese Haliburton, Indiana Pacers
The Pacers rely on more of a balanced attack than the Thunder, but Haliburton is easily their likeliest NBA Finals MVP candidate, even though it was Pascal Siakam who earned Eastern Conference finals MVP honors.
Haliburton’s performances can be wildly inconsistent. For example, he had 32 points, 15 assists, and 12 rebounds in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Knicks then was held to eight points on 2 of 7 shooting in Game 5. But if the Pacers need a big shot in the final seconds, he is the man to take it and make it.
His postseason has somewhat been overshadowed by his father’s unnecessary altercation with Giannis Antetokounmpo. Embracing his role as a villain has also ruffled some feathers. But the NBA is part sports, part entertainment, and Haliburton, a wrestling enthusiast who has appeared on WWE events, has fully leaned into that.
Down have gone the Bucks, Cavaliers, and Knicks, and Haliburton has hit big shots in each series. He will need to similarly deliver in the clutch if the Pacers are to pull off a massive NBA Finals upset. But if he does, a Finals MVP could follow.
Pascal Siakam, Indiana Pacers
Haliburton’s clutch shots and performances are a big part of why the Pacers are in the NBA Finals, but they would not be here without Siakam either.
Siakam was a key part of the Toronto Raptors’ supporting cast in their NBA title run in 2019, and since then has become one of the better power forwards in the league, averaging 20+ PPG and 6+ RPG in each of the last six seasons.
After playing a key role in Indiana’s run to the Eastern Conference finals last season, he has been at the heart of their success this postseason as well. He leads the Pacers in scoring (21.1 PPG) and is shooting 53.7% from the field, and after averaging 24.8 PPG and scoring 30+ points three times against the Knicks, he, not Haliburton, was named Eastern Conference finals MVP.
Consistency can be a big factor in who wins NBA Finals MVP, and that could very well push Siakam above Haliburton if both players are in the mix.
Jalen Williams, Oklahoma City Thunder
SGA is the both the drink and the straw that stirs it for OKC, but you don’t win 68 games in the regular season and reach the NBA Finals without a strong cast of characters.
Of that cast of characters, Williams is the most likely to come away with Finals MVP honors if SGA somehow does not.
In his third NBA season, Williams averaged career highs in scoring (21.6 PPG), rebounding (5.3 RPG), and assists (5.1 APG). He also received his first All-Star nod.
In the playoffs, he has averaged 20.4 PPG, 5.8 RPG, and 5.3 APG. And after averaging only 17.6 PPG and shooting 37.5% from the field and 23.7% from three against the Nuggets in the second round, he bounced in the Western Conference finals, averaging 22.2 PPG and shooting 49.4% from the field and 46.2% from three against the Timberwolves.
Bettors may point to Jaylen Brown’s NBA Finals MVP last season as a good reason to back Williams. But it must be said that there is a bigger gap between SGA and Williams in terms of role and production than there is between Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
Still, anything can happen. Williams provides betting value, even as a relative long shot. Ultimately, only two players in the last two decades have won the award after entering the series with odds of +1000 or longer: Kawhi Leonard (+1800) with the Spurs in 2014 and Andre Iguodala (+12500) with the Warriors the following year.
