What Are the MLB Divisions?

In Major League Baseball, there are six divisions, three in the American League and three in the National League.

The makeup of the MLB divisions mirrors the NBA, which features six five-team divisions spread evenly across two 15-team conferences. The Eastern and Western Conference in the NBA are the equivalent of the American League and National League in Major League Baseball.

The current MLB divisional alignment has been in place since the 1994 season. Each division has five teams, and the current makeup of each division has been in place since 2013, when the Houston Astros were moved from the NL Central to the AL West.

Here is the current makeup of the six MLB divisions:

American League

  • American League East: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays
  • AL Central: Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins
  • AL West: Athletics (formerly the Oakland Athletics), Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers

National League

  • National League East: Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals
  • NL Central: Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals
  • NL West: Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants

Knowing which teams are typically division contenders is key to betting on MLB division winner odds.

In the American League, high expectations are perennially in place for the Yankees and Astros in their respective divisions, while the same is the case for the Braves and Dodgers in their respective divisions.

This can change, of course. Teams get older, other teams improve, and some teams shift from win-now mode into rebuild mode. But those four teams typically carry high expectations every season due to talent, payroll, and history of success.
