After a day off, the WNBA is back tonight with a two-game slate. The Golden State Valkyries will take on the Phoenix Mercury at PHX Arena. This will be the first time these two teams face each other this season.

Phoenix is off to a 5-3 start and are third in the Western Conference. They come into this game off a bad loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday night. The Mercury will definitely be looking to bounce back tonight on home court.

Satou Sabally has been holding it down for this team. The team has been without Kahleah Copper since the start of the season and now Alyssa Thomas the past few games. Thomas has already been ruled out of tonight’s game. In the last three games, she has averaged just under 22 ppg. and just over 9 rpg.

The Mercury are 4-1 at home as well this season. They’re more than comfortable in front of the home crowd and they’ll look to continue that tonight.

New Valkyries Still Trying to Find Themselves in 1st Year

It’s been a decent start for the newly formed Valkyries. They are 2-4 to start the year but have lost their last 3 games. This team is obviously brand new to the league and to each other, so chemistry needs to be built.

So far, Veronica Burton and Janelle Salaun have emerged as good offensive weapons. Kayla Thornton as well has been contributing, and all three players are averaging 12 ppg. Salaun and Thornton clean the glass well with both averaging over 6 rpg.

Golden State is 1-2 on the road, but it’s still too early to tell what kind of team they’ll be. Statistically, they rank in the bottom of the league for most categories offensively and defensively as well. They have the second-to-worst offensive rating and are last in three-point shooting and assists per game.

I see this as a great spot for Phoenix. Coming off that bad loss to a really good team and now facing one of the weaker teams gives them a nice bounce-back opportunity. Going into that game vs. the Lynx, they were 3-1 in their last four games.

The line is set in a very good spot for us Mercury bettors. I get it’s because both Copper and Thomas are out to go along with the beating they just took. But in the end, they’re just giving us a gift because Sabally and co. should beat the brakes off Golden State.

Give me Sabally to record over 29.5 points and rebounds combined for -122. She has hit this in her last two out of three games. Satou will be the center of the offense once again and should have her way with this Valkyries defense. I also like for her to get nine rebounds at -104 and she has also hit this in her last two of three outings.

It should be interesting to see if Golden State can keep this game close against this injured Phoenix team. I think we’ll see a battle, but ultimately the Mercury come out on top. For one last lean, I think this game total goes under based on a beaten up offense and a novice offense.
