Round 2 of Kelsey Plum taking on her former team, but this time it’s in her old barn. The Los Angeles Sparks will take on the Las Vegas Aces at the Michelob ULTRA Arena. Vegas won their last matchup a little over a week ago by a score of 96-81.
Los Angeles is 3-7 so far this season and 6th in the West. They come into this game off an overtime loss to the Valkyries on Monday night. The Sparks are 2-2 on the road this season, which isn’t bad, they just need to get it together at home.
Kelsey Plum is, as expected, leading this team. She’s averaging 21.8 points and 5.4 assists per game so far. She has fit in well with her teammates. Dearica Hamby and Azura Stevens have both been playing good basketball surrounded by Plum. Rickea Jackson took a leave for a few games, but has since returned and is a big part of this team.
The team is still without last year’s No. 2 pick in the draft, Cameron Brink. She suffered an ACL tear last season that has sidelined her since. Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts said she was encouraged by the progress she was seeing out of Brink. She has been practicing with the team, but still no set date for her official return.

Aces look to grab another win in shaky start to the season

Las Vegas Aces new guard Jewell Loyd dribbles the ball into the offensive zone.
The Aces are 4-3 this season and 3rd in the West. They have played about 2-3 games less than most teams in the league, so they have a few in hand currently. Las Vegas comes into this game off a terrible loss to Golden State by 27 points.
Las Vegas is 2-0 at home so far and I’m sure it’ll feel nice after last game. The Valkyries are heating up and have the best defensive rating in the league, but come on – that was a gross loss. They need a statement game after that one to remind everyone they’re not to be messed with.
A’ja Wilson, who is coming off an MVP season, has been off to a good start again. She is averaging 22 points and 10 rebounds per game. Wilson is the leader of this team, surrounded by Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray. There is another piece of this team that has been questionable.
That is Jewell Loyd. The newcomer who came over this offseason has been struggling. She is only averaging 9.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Loyd was a 20 point per game player when in Seattle but has yet to find herself in Vegas.

I think we see a big game from Plum, but it won’t be enough to get the job done. The Aces could use the win for their Commissioner’s Cup contention, and we all know the points matter. Watch out for this Aces team at home who will want to shutdown Plum as much as Plum will want to shine.
This is a great bounce-back spot for the Aces after that bad loss to Golden State. Getting blown out by a brand-new team in this league by 27 points is just straight embarrassing. The fuel of this blowout plus the fuel of Plum back in the building should equal a big night from the Aces.
Give me A’ja Wilson to perform again. She had 35 points and 13 rebounds last game they played, and I expect much of the same. Her points line of over 24.5 for -102 looks very nice as well as her rebound line of over 10.5 for -130. You’re getting good value on her points, but her PR (points + rebounds combined) is 34.5 for -122 and also a great look if you don’t want to rely on just one stat category.
I also like for Kelsey to show out this game. She had a rough game last time they played with only 17 points, going 1 of 7 from 3-point range. I think the first game shook the jitters off and now being in her old barn will settle her in. Her 3-point line is 2.5 for -154 and I’ll be taking it to 4 for +174. She’s shown us all season that the volume is there.
