Back to the desert we go for a Western Conference showdown. The Dallas Wings head to the PHX Arena to take on the Phoenix Mercury. This will be the first time these two teams play each other this season.

Dallas is off to a rough start with a 1-9 record. They come into this game on a five-game losing streak. The Wings are 1-4 on the road, so maybe there’s some hope that their only win this season came on the road.

Rookie Paige Bueckers has missed the last four games, but is expected to return tonight. Bueckers is averaging 14.7 points, 6.7 assists, and 4.7 rebounds in her first six games. The No. 1 overall draft pick had a good start to this season and this team could use that offense back.

Arike Ogunbowale and DiJonai Carrington have been holding the team down. Carrington has had 15 or more points in her last five of six games and Ogunbowale is coming off a 26-point outing. Both ladies will be happy to have Paige back in the lineup.

Phoenix looks to get another home win on the year

Phoenix is 6-4 so far and are second in the West. The Mercury come into this game off a loss to the Storm on Saturday night. It will be nice for them to go back home for a game, as they’re 5-2 at home this season.

Injuries have not been kind to the Mercury. They lost guard Kahleah Copper to a knee injury at the start of the season, but she should return in the next few weeks. Forward Alyssa Thomas has been out the last few games with a left calf injury, but is probable to return tonight.

Satou Sabally has been carrying the team in their absences. She is averaging 20.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. Sabally has scored 22 or more points in three of the five games that Thomas has been out. The team has gone 2-3 without Thomas.

The Mercury will try to give to the Wings their sixth loss in a row and it should be a good one. Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks.

As much as I’d like for the Wings to win this game, I don’t even think they cover the spread. It will be good for them to have Bueckers back, but the Mercury are really good and could surprise people this year.

Thomas coming back is also huge for the Mercury. I think it’s going to be a major factor in this game, even bigger than Paige being back. The Wings will pick up some shooting and another facilitator, but Thomas does it all and will make opportunities for Sabally.

I like Paige to get over her assist line, which should be around 6-7 for -120. She’ll be shooting that jumper and probably get 10 points, but I expect her to be feeding the ball to Ogunbowale and Carrington. Her PRA is a good look as well and will probably be around 24-25 for also around -120.

Alyssa Thomas’ PRA may also be a move. She recorded 32, 24, 34, and 31 in her last four games before injury. I’d imagine the number will come out around 30 and I think this could be a good play as she’ll be heavily involved. It should be priced around -120 as well.
