Sun vs Lynx Game 2 Predictions & WNBA Picks Today (10/1)

After both sides swept the opening postseason round, the Sun opened the WNBA semifinals with a 73-70 win over the Lynx in Game 1. Marina Mabrey was the hero for Connecticut as she scored a team-high 20 points — including going 6-of-11 (54.5%) from deep — while DeWanna Bonner (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Alyssa Thomas (17 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles.

The Sun’s perimeter success was a big reason why they were able to pull off the road upset. They shot 40.9% (9-of-22) from the three-point line as a team, whereas the Lynx only had a 25.0% (5-of-20) success rate in that regard. It also helped that Connecticut led in terms of both rebounds (39-32) and fast-break points (10-5).

The Lynx also didn’t do themselves any favors by taking their foot off the gas pedal late in the game. Minnesota entered the fourth quarter with a five-point lead only to be outscored 16-8 by Connecticut in the final frame. A similar effort on Tuesday would likely lead to the same result.

Do the Sun have what it takes to take a 2-0 series lead on Tuesday? 

Even though the Lynx are favored to bounce back, I’m not too sure about that. After all, including the regular season, the Sun are 3-1 SU against the Lynx in 2024 and have won 13 of the last 16 meetings between these teams. Additionally, Minnesota is currently on a five-game losing streak to Connecticut at Target Center, further illustrating how lopsided the all-time series has been.

With that in mind, I’m predicting another Sun victory tonight. The Lynx need to show that they can play a complete game and until that happens, beating a team as good as the Sun will be difficult.

Let’s also take Connecticut to cover the spread. Not only are the Sun 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine games, but they’re also 6-1 ATS in their last seven road meetings with the Lynx, who are only 2-4 ATS across their last six home games. Even if the Sun don’t end up winning, I won’t be shocked if this game is only decided by one possession based on how close Game 1 was.

Mabrey has been a solid shooter throughout her career and her 2024 performance solidifies that fact. The former Notre Dame product averaged career highs in threes made (2.5) on 37.8% shooting during the regular season and is now averaging 4.7 3PM with a 42.4 3P% through three postseason appearances. Furthermore, she’s finished two of her last three games with at least five three-pointers made.

Considering how the Sun had their way with the Lynx from deep on Sunday, I expect another big performance from Mabrey this evening.
