WNBA Commissioners Cup 2025

The Commissioner’s Cup looks to stay in Minnesota

For those that don’t know, here is a quick bit of info about the Commissioner’s Cup and what’s on the line in the Target Center Tuesday night.

Starting in 2021, the Commissioner’s Cup has been a part of the season. Except for the final, each game in the Commissioner’s Cup is part of the regular-season schedule.

In the Commissioner’s Cup, each team has a game against each team in their respective conference. After all of those games are completed, the top team in the standings in each conference advances to the Commissioner’s Cup final.

Each player on the winning Commissioner’s Cup team receives $30,000 (with an extra $5,000 given to the MVP), while each player on the losing finalist receives $10,000.

As you can see, there is A LOT on the line in this winner-take-all Championship game. And I expect these ladies to go all out to win it. But will we have all the stars ready to go on Tuesday night?

Will Caitlin Clark Play?

Caitlin Clark Injury woes

Can Caitlin Clark return after a 2 game absence with a groin injury?

There is some doubt as to whether Caitlin Clark will be able to suit up for this game, as she is still dealing with a groin injury that has caused her to miss the Fever’s last two games.

Fever Head Coach Stephanie White said this on Monday when asked about Clark’s availability:

“We still don’t know. It’s a day-to-day thing. Did some stuff at practice today, making sure we don’t have any setbacks. We got to be smart about this. We’ll evaluate tomorrow morning at shootaround.”

According to reports, she has practiced the last few days leading up to the game and it is looking like all signs are pointing to her PLAYING. But, her injury designation is officially a GAME TIME DECISION, so stay tuned for updates leading up to the few hours before the game for the official word on her status.

UPDATE: As of 2 P.M. EST, the Indiana Fever announced Caitlin Clark will be OUT tonight. She is still dealing with her groin injury that will make her miss her third straight game.

Given the nature of the game and what is at stake, I would be surprised if Clark doesn’t suit up to play in this one but obviously the Fever have loftier ambitions than the Commissioner’s Cup.

If she isn’t good enough to go, I doubt they risk further injury which would really derail the back half of their season and their championship aspirations.

Clark has had an up-and-down sophomore campaign, mostly due to injuries, but she is always capable of taking over a game with her playmaking and scoring. So, the Fever are hoping one of the biggest stars in the game can lead the line against the best team in the league and the defending Commissioner’s Cup Champs.

Can the Lynx go Back-to-Back?

2024 Commissioner's Cup Winners, Minnesota Lynx

2024 Commissioner’s Cup Winners, Minnesota Lynx

The Minnesota Lynx are looking to run it back, as they were able to win the 2024 Cup last season in a brawl with the eventual WNBA Champions, the New York Liberty.

This season’s Cup brings a whole new challenge, yet the Lynx look primed to take home the Cup once again in their home arena.

Newly crowned All-Star Captain and MVP frontrunner Napheesa Collier leads the best team in the WNBA, and Collier has been simply fantastic for the 14-2 Lynx.

She is leading the league in points, averaging 24.4 ppg., sits third in rebounds, averaging 8.5 rpg., and is also getting it done on the defensive end.

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year is sitting fourth in blocks and in steals.

Napheesa will surely have plenty to say in this matchup and it’s hard to not back her and the Lynx to take home the trophy once again.

Napheesa Collier MVP candidate 2025 season scores bucket

Lynx forward Napheesa Collier points to her teammates after scoring a bucket

I know it’s chalky. But I really think the Lynx are going to win this game, possibly by 10+ points and if they do that, Collier is going to be the reason why.

I said it above, she is the MVP frontrunner for a reason and when she gets going, she is so hard to stop. She has hit her points line in her last two games against Indiana last season, with 26 and 31, respectively, and given what is on the line in this game, I think we see another big game from the possible MVP.

As for the Team Total, the Fever have allowed 86+ points in five straight games and the Lynx has eclipsed this line in two straight versus Indiana. The Lynx have also hit 90+ in back-to-back games and scored 94 in the Cup Final game last year against the Liberty.

The Champs are gonna run it back. Let’s cash in!
