Draper Defeat Tops Thursday Thrills
In yesterday’s completed second round matches, five more seeded players were eliminated, four in men’s singles and one in women’s singles.
The most notable result of the day saw fourth-seeded Jack Draper fall to Marin Cilic in four sets. The 2014 US Open champion and former world number three had not reached the third round of a Grand Slam since the 2022 US Open, but he will now face Spain’s Jaume Munar on Saturday following his 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win over Draper.
After the first two rounds of this year’s Wimbledon, only 12 of 32 men’s singles seeds remain alive, while 15 of 32 women’s singles seeds are still in the tournament.
With five of the top nine men’s seeds already eliminated, the prospect of another Grand Slam final matchup between No. 1 Jannik Sinner and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz looks even more likely than it did prior to the tournament. The toughest remaining draw for Sinner is Novak Djokovic, who he has beaten five straight times, while the toughest remaining draw for Alcaraz is No. 5 Taylor Fritz, who has played back-to-back five-set matches.
On the women’s side, only top seed Aryna Sabalenka remains among the top five seeds, but the top three pre-tournament favorites are all still alive. That includes No. 8 seed Iga Swiatek, who dropped the first set yesterday against American Caty McNally but dominated the last two sets to advance.
Wimbledon Day Five Predictions and Picks
Men’s Singles
This is the point in Grand Slam tournaments when seeded players begin to face one another, but with so few seeds remaining, the third round slate on the men’s side features only two such matchups.
The first is today’s matchup between Fritz and No. 26 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Fritz is a firm favorite, but a third consecutive long match awaits. The two played just last week in the Eastbourne Open semifinals, with Fritz winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. They also played in the quarterfinals of the Delray Beach Open (hard court) in February, with the Spaniard scoring a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) upset.
Fritz should win, but Davidovich Fokina, the Wimbledon boys’ champion in 2017, will take at least one set. This one didn’t work out so well the other day with Ugo Humbert and Gael Monfils, but Fritz to win and both players to win a set is the play here at +120 (at Bovada).
Another match that bears watching sees No. 17 seed Karen Khachanov take on Nuno Borges.
Prior to this tournament, Borges had not won a main draw match at Wimbledon. After bouncing No. 16 seed Francisco Cerundolo in the first round then defeating Briton Billy Harris in the second round, he is looking to reach the last 16 in a Grand Slam for the third time.
Khachanov had a tough opening set against Mackenzie McDonald in the first round and lost the first set to Shintaro Mochizuki in an eventual five-set win in the second round. Back Borges to take the first set (+165 at BetOnline) and cover the match spread (+4 at Bovada), and sprinkle some extra on his ML. Borges is a tough out, and this is a match he can win.
Women’s Singles
In women’s singles, there’s one match between seeded players. Elise Mertens, who is seeded 24th, will face Elina Svitolina, the No. 13 seed.
Svitolina reached the quarterfinals at both the Australian Open and French Open, and she is seeking a third straight deep run at Wimbledon after making the semis in 2023 and the quarters last year.
To do that might require taking down Sabalenka next, but she will at least reach the round of 16. Were Sabalenka not directly in her path, Svitolina would be garnering more attention as a potential final hopeful, after breezing past Ana Bondar and Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her first two matches.
A little more of a test may come against Mertens, but Svitolina should still dispatch her in straight sets. The best odds for Svitolina -1.5 sets come from BetOnline, where it is +143 at the time of writing. She is having a really good year, and of her last 19 wins, 17 have come in straight sets.
As mentioned, Svitolina’s fourth-round opponent would be Sabalenka, provided she sees off Emma Raducanu.
Since winning the US Open in 2021, Raducanu has reached the fourth round in a Grand Slam only once. That came at Wimbledon last year, when she lost to qualifier Lulu Sun in the last 16. But she played well against Mimi Xu and 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova, dispatching them both 6-3, 6-3. Sabalenka, meanwhile, showed some vulnerability in her 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over Marie Bouzkova in the second round.
Can Raducanu remain calm and confident? If she can, she could push Sabalenka. Take the over 20.5 games, which is available for the best odds at Everygame at the time of writing.
