Early upsets are a hallmark of Grand Slam tennis tournaments, no matter the surface. The first day of Wimbledon typically features at least one major upset, as grass can be an unpredictable and unpleasant surface for many. Yesterday, this year’s tournament opened with high seeds being dumped out in both men’s and women’s singles.
What is in store for the second day, and what are some of the best bets on the board? Read on for Wimbledon day two predictions and picks, as well as odds for those picks from top online sportsbooks such as BetOnline.

Medvedev, Badosa Headline Wimbledon Day 1 Upsets
The first day of the third Grand Slam of the year saw 10 total seeded players depart the tournament at the earliest possible point.
Seven of those results were in men’s singles, led by the elimination of No. 8 Holger Rune and No. 9 Daniil Medvedev.
Rune won the first two sets against qualifier Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 6-4, but the Chilean roared back and took the final three sets 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 to record one of the biggest wins of his career. Medvedev, meanwhile, continued a miserable run in majors, following early exits at the Australian Open (second round) and French Open (first round) with a four-set loss to Benjamin Bonzi.
Also, No. 16 Francisco Cerundolo fell to Nuno Borges, who reached the second round of Wimbledon for the first time with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 victory.
In women’s singles, the biggest of three upsets was Katie Boulter’s 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over No. 9 Paula Badosa. That was an upset only in terms of an unseeded player defeating a high seed, but it wasn’t a mismatch, as Boulter was only a slight underdog and Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam in which Badosa has never made the quarterfinals.
Wimbledon Day 2 Predictions and Picks
Men’s Singles
In men’s singles, Tuesday’s slate features an all-French matchup between No. 18-seed Ugo Humbert and Gael Monfils, who is still at it with his 39th birthday two months away.
Monfils’ best days are behind him, and grass has never been a surface of strength for him. But he is a fighter of the highest order, and while Humbert certainly has the advantage on grass and overall, Monfils is -310 (at Bovada) to win at least one set.
Monfils has taken at least one set in each of their four completed head-to-head matches, and he is 2-1 in their last three head-to-head meetings, all of which took place last year (all on hard courts). Humbert should win, but Monfils should win at least one set. Humbert to win and both players to win at least one set is +120 at Bovada. That is worth the pre-match investment, and this is a match that bears watching for some live betting action as well.
Women’s Singles
The Wimbledon women’s singles draw was not particularly kind to French Open champion Coco Gauff, who will open the tournament today with a matchup against 42nd-ranked Dayana Yastremska.
Gauff could be in for a good scare here. This is not her favorite surface, and she has played only one match since winning the title at Roland Garros, a straight-sets loss to Xinyu Wang in Berlin.
Yastremska, meanwhile, enters Wimbledon in some decent form. She made the final of the Nottingham Open, then made the quarterfinal of the Eastbourne Open, recording wins over Magda Linette (the No. 27-seed at Wimbledon) in both tournaments.
The match spread for this one differs depending on the sportsbook, but at BetOnline, it is 5.5 games. There’s every chance that Gauff could hit the ground running and get past Yastremska with ease, but this shapes up to be a tough test, and Yastremska +5.5 games (-130 at BetOnline) is a strong play. Even if she were to lose 6-4, 6-3, it would still hit.
In another match this afternoon (U.S. time), Belinda Bencic will take on Alycia Parks. This is not a notable match in terms of rankings or storylines, but there is betting value on offer.
Parks has lost her opening match in six of her last eight tournaments and has not played since a straight-sets loss to 273rd-ranked Carol Zhao in the qualifiers of the Queen’s Club Championships more than three weeks ago.
Bencic just returned from a short injury layoff and was dusted 6-1, 6-2 by Ekaterina Alexandrova, but she had been having a solid year before being sidelined in May and missing the French Open. Look for her to sweep Parks aside in straight sets and make the -1.5 sets (+113 at BetOnline) a winner.
