After winning the first grass-court title of his career, Carlos Alcaraz enters Wimbledon aiming for his best result at the tournament. That quest will get underway on Tuesday with a first-round matchup against veteran French player Jeremy Chardy.
Alcaraz returned to the top of the ATP rankings by winning the Queen’s Club Championships over a week ago, ensuring that he would be the top seed in the Wimbledon men’s singles draw.
He is the top seed, but he isn’t the favorite to win the tournament, as was the case with the French Open. That would be seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, who defeated Alcaraz in the semis at Roland Garros on the way to winning his record 23rd Grand Slam singles title and is seeking a fifth straight Wimbledon crown.
The 20-year-old Spaniard could meet Djokovic in the final with a chance to disrupt his shot for a calendar-year Grand Slam, but there are several hurdles to clear before then.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Jeremy Chardy Prediction and Picks
While Alcaraz is still very much in the early stages of his career, Chardy is at the back end of his. In singles, the 36-year-old has one Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance (the 2013 Australian Open) and has reached the fourth round in a Grand Slam four times.
But those days are long past him, and an upset of Alcaraz is highly, highly unlikely.
Chardy hasn’t made it past the second round in a Grand Slam since he reached the third round at the French Open in 2016, and he hasn’t made it past the second round at Wimbledon since his career-best fourth-round appearance in 2014.
Due to complications from a COVID-19 vaccine, Chardy stepped away from playing in September 2021 and didn’t play a match for 15 months, only making his return to action in January of this year.
He reached the Australian Open men’s doubles semifinals with partner Fabrice Martin, but this will be just his sixth singles match since his return. And since winning his Australian Open first-round match against Daniel Galan, he has dropped four straight matches.
So, it’s safe to say he is up against it here. Grass may not be Alcaraz’s favorite surface, but he is coming off of a fantastic result at the Queen’s Club Championships.
He needed a third-set tiebreak to see off Arthur Rinderknech in his first match, but after losing his opening set of that match, he reeled off ten consecutive set wins to win the tournament. His last three wins were over Grigor Dimitrov, Sebastian Korda, and Alex de Minaur, all of whom are seeded in the Wimbledon men’s singles draw.
Chardy has nothing to lose in this match, and as much as he has experienced in his career, he won’t have any fear here. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he makes Alcaraz work for a couple of sets or even takes a set, but I’m backing a pretty comfortable stroll for the world number one. Back the under 28 games at -120.
