Niclas Fulkrug will be a huge part of West Ham's offense this season - West Ham United Chelsea Picks

Niclas Fulkrug will be a huge part of West Ham’s offense this season

Both teams failed to win their opening matches, however Chelsea was still able to earn points. The Blues hosted Crystal Palace in their first match, and they had some help from VAR. Crystal Palace forward, Eberechi Eze, who is now a member of Arsenal, had a successful free kick disallowed early in the match, as the two teams continued to play to a scoreless draw. Despite dominating the stat sheet, Chelsea could not pull off three points at home.

As for West Ham United, their opener was terrible. They went on the road to face newly promoted Sunderland, and quite frankly, they were embarrassed. Perhaps they were overlooking their opponent, but the hosts netted three second half goals to skunk their visitors, winning 3-0. Now back at home, one would think West Ham isn’t overestimating Chelsea, but rather may have turned their full attention to securing some points at home this afternoon.

Despite losing, West Ham still controlled over 62% of possession, outshot their opponents, and won the corner kick battle. But again, that was all against a motivated team coming up from the English Championship. Sunderland had nothing to lose. Chelsea is a big favorite on the road, and I think for good reason.

Even though they were unable to secure a win, they also controlled plenty of possession (71.5%), as well as outshooting Palace 19-11, and winning the corner kick battle, 11-2. The Blues know they should’ve picked up three points at home to open the season, and without a marquee match on their immediate schedule, I expect Chelsea to leave it all on the pitch tonight.

Robert Sanchez kept a clean sheet in his opening match for Chelsea - West Ham Chelsea Picks

Best Bet: West Ham Team Total Under 0.5 (+174) BetOnline

For starters, we are getting the best line on the market. West Ham’s TT is priced around (+160) everywhere else, and the same goes for Chelsea to keep a clean sheet.

Now, if you want to add Chelsea to win, thinking they earn three points via a shutout, you can find that closer to 2-1. However, I want to see more from Chelsea’s offense before I back them, and I’m comfortable with how their defense played in the first match.

Chelsea did a great job of limited their opponent’s opportunities. Crystal Palace only produced two corner kicks and four shots on target as the Blues defense held strong. West Ham also only created four shots on target, and seven corner kicks, but they were playing extra aggressive for most of this match.

I see this game being low scoring, as I don’t see West Ham contributing. However, I would like to see more from Chelsea’s offense before I rush to back them to win in shutout fashion on the road. Ultimately, I think we see a boring, kick around for most of 90 minutes, with perhaps Chelsea finding a winner later in the match.

Talking out loud, the Under 2.75 (-115) is definitely worth a play as well.

Prediction: Chelsea Wins 1-0 (+800)
