Ecuador is a very good team. After losing to Brazil in September of 2024, they have been unbeaten in 11 straight FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. While they haven’t necessarily had the toughest tests, prior to losing to Brazil they drew with Argentina and Mexico in the Copa America, but unfortunately Messi and company ended up advancing on penalty kicks. Taking down a tough opponent like the United States on their home soil would be a huge confidence booster going into the World Cup next year for this overlooked South American squad.

But the United States seem to be bringing their top squad. Mauricio Pochettino has gathered the best of the best for these two October Friendlies, making fans (me) think they’ll get to see a potential look at the starting 11 for the World Cup roster. Headlined by Christian Pulisic, the USMNT also has Haji Wright, Tim Weah and Florian Balogun up top. Newcomer Diego Luna, Malik Tillman, Weston McKennie and Cristian Roldan headline the midfield, while Tim Ream, Chris Richards and Miles and Jedi Robinson hold the backline. There is plenty of talent on this roster, but can they turn it into a victory tonight?

The books clearly think we have a defensive battle, as the under 2.5 is heavily juiced. Ecuador has been involved in five straight matches going under 2.5, and 10 of their 12 World Cup qualifiers have stayed under as well. They don’t score much, but they have a great backline, which will make it extra difficult for the United States to break through and put one in the back of the net.

Call me unpatriotic, but I think Ecuador can pull this off. This modest little Same Game Parlay would cash if we see a 1-1 draw, which is what I expect out of this match. To give you the full breakdown, I think Pochettino uses this first friendly to try out some of his final ideas before they really lock in for their 2026 World Cup preparation. Against Australia on Tuesday, we are probably going to see the A-team. No doubt about it. But tonight, there might be some unfamiliar players trying to build some chemistry.

Ecuador is a well oiled machine and have nearly all the intangibles in my eyes. Their defense is very equipped to keep the United States from scoring, something the team has historically struggled to do in big matchups. We already should be expecting a match where goals are tough to come by, the total is telling us that. Add in the fact that Ecuador simply has much more motivation on their side, and I have no problem backing them to not lose and keep the United States from netting more than one goal.

Ecuador will find the net first (probably), assuming the United States overlook them a tad. Then the hosts will spend the next 60 minutes or so trying to find an equalizer (that won’t hurt us). And once again, United States fans will be wondering if we will ever have some success on the international level.
