Costa Rica finished second in Group A behind Mexico, but tied with them on total points with seven. Costa Rica beat Suriname in a seven goal thriller, 4-3, with the winning goal coming in the 90’+13′ on a penalty kick. The Costa Ricans went on to beat the Dominican Republic 2-1, on an 85′ minute winner, and then played Mexico to a scoreless draw.
These two teams played a friendly in January, where the United States were victorious, winning 3-0. Prior to that, they had not met in international play since 2022 where Costa Rica won 2-0 in a World Cup qualifying match. Tonight, only one can win and advance to the CONCACAF Gold Cup Semifinals.

This line is way too heavy towards the Americans in my eyes. Obviously I root for the USMNT to succeed, but we do not deserve to be this big of a favorite in this spot. Sure, they’ve made the Gold Cup Semifinals in 12 straight installments, last missing the final four in 2000. However, I believe Costa Rica has more intangibles on their side, and again, I see the value lying with the underdog.

While Costa Rica isn’t head and shoulders better, they are familiar with this team, have nothing to lose, and their offense is firing on all cylinders.
