A month prior to that, they met in the Gold Cup Semifinals, where again, the US advanced on penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw.

The United States have been smashing teams so far this summer. They are coming off back-to-back 4-0 wins against Ireland, a 4-0 win against Jamaica, and a 3-0 win over China. However, they did lose to Brazil 2-1 back in April. The U.S. is still the top team in the world, but Canada sneaks in at No. 8. Ireland is No. 25, Jamaica is No. 40, and China is No. 17.
Facing a top-10 team did not go well for the Americans when they faced Brazil (No. 4). And tonight could be a wake up call if they aren’t careful. Canada is also coming off several friendly wins, over Costa Rica (No. 43) and Haiti (No. 50), while splitting contests with Argentina (No. 32).

Like I said, these teams hate each other. There is going to be nothing “friendly” about this match, other than some club teammates reuniting when the 90 minutes is up. But while the match is being played, these players are all for representing their country.
The United States has made several player debuts during this string of matches. While I expect them to go back to their “regular” first team lineup, Emma Hayes could let some of the younger players get some minutes against a more formidable opponent than Ireland.
Ultimately, this match is very important to both countries, and I see both coaches focusing on defense first in this match. Sorry fans, but I think we see a low scoring friendly tonight.
