Sporting KC vs. Austin FC Picks and Predictions: Stand Alone MLS on Sunday Night

Myrto Uzuni has six goals for Austin FC this MLS season - Austin Nashville Picks

Amongst our massive NFL Sunday, we still have a solo match on the Major League Soccer slate. Yesterday things didn’t necessarily go our way, but we’ve had success this season so it’s time to keep firing. The playoff races are heating up with less than 10 matches remaining per team, and squads need to break into the top nine to make at least the wild card round. Both clubs have plenty to fight for this evening. Tonight, Sporting KC looks to climb the Western Conference standings as they face Austin FC, who is already in a playoff position. But not by very many points. Both will bring their best tonight in Kansas City, so let’s find our favorite MLS picks.

So far, we’ve done well in the MLS.

As stated above, Austin FC is already in a playoff position, but things are close. They sit at No. 7 on the table, but they have room to move in either direction. A win tonight would give Austin FC three points, lifting them above the Portland Timbers and tied with LAFC in points. Now, they don’t lose any points with a loss and no one else plays today, but Austin FC is just two points ahead of the Colorado Rapids and three points ahead of the San Jose Earthquakes who sit in the final playoff spot at No. 9. They will certainly want to build more of a gap if they can.

Sporting KC has had a rougher season, currently sitting No. 13 on the Western Conference table. They have 27 points with a 7-6-15 (W-D-L) record, and with six remaining matches, they are eight points out of a playoff spot. Is now the time they throw in the towel? Or do they try to help themselves with a home win tonight?

Look, it’s NFL Sunday, I get it. This match won’t get much attention, not a lot of eyeballs are going to be on it, but I do still see value on the board. I don’t think Sporting KC is at the point where they roll over and die. Maybe after this one that could be the strategy, but at home they should bring a fantastic effort. The stadium should be packed, as the Kansas City Chiefs were beat on Friday Night in Brazil, so hometown fans won’t have to avoid this match to watch Mahomes play. We watched him lose already (sad).

Is home field advantage much of a thing in soccer? It certainly can be. Regardless, let’s lock in for a 45 minute sweat.

Full disclosure, I will only want to pay attention to this game until halftime when Sunday Night Football kicks off. Then my focus will be in Orchard Park as the Buffalo Bills host the Baltimore Ravens. Therefore, let’s just get in and get out with a first half cash.

Back in February, Austin FC beat Sporting KC down in Texas, 1-0. The first half was scoreless, with the hosts finding a 76′ minute winner to seal the victory and secure three points. There were only four total shots on target and five total corner kicks in a low scoring match where offense was completely rare. Now, both teams are coming off a win, and a high scoring one at that, which makes me believe defense will the sole focus tonight, especially in the first half.

Neither team will want to concede early, allowing their opponent to sit back and park the bus all match, which is what I imagine either one doing if they were to find an early lead. Austin will look to secure more points and jump some teams in the rankings, while Sporting should play to earn at least a point at home as the playoff races heat up.

Either way, I see this being a scoreless first half resulting a quick draw for us. Give me the full game under as well with push potential at under 3 (-105). I’ll just scoreboard watch the result of the total.
