These two teams last met almost a year ago in the EURO 2024 Semifinals. The Spaniards took down the French squad 2-1 after three first half goals. Randal Kolo Muani gave France a lead just nine minutes into the game, but goals by Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo just four minutes apart were enough for Spain to advance, and eventually win the EURO 2024.

Prior to that, France got the better of Spain in the 2021 UEFA Nations League, beating them 2-1 in the Final match. Now the two meet in the semifinals as the Spaniards look to defend their title.

France was 4-1-1 in group stage, drawing once with Israel and splitting their matches with Italy, losing and winning 3-1. In the quarterfinals they lost the first leg to Croatia, 2-0, but battled back in the second leg to force extra time and PKs. Eventually France advanced 5-4 on penalties to make the Nations League Semifinal.

Spain won five of their six matches in group stage, drawing with Serbia to open the tournament. They drew with the Netherlands in both quarterfinal legs, first 2-2 and then 3-3 in the second match. However, the Spaniards were able to advance on PKs, 5-4. Throughout the tournament, Spain has netted 18 goals and conceded just nine in eight total matches, while the French side have only netted 14 and allowed eight in their eight matches.

UEFA Nations League Semifinal Best Bets

Can Spain take down France and advance to the UEFA Nations League Final?

Lamine Yamal has a goal and an assist for Spain in the UEFA Nations League

Best Bets: Spain to Advance (-145) Bovada

Spain has had 15 different players score in this tournament, while nine others have tallied an assist. Pedri has played in all eight matches and only contributed one assist. I think he certainly steps up in this contest. As for the French, only eight different players have scored and six others have an assist.

While these cores have only met twice during international play, they’ve split both meetings with huge implications. Today I expect both teams to bring their top lineup, and I lean slightly more with the Spanish. Their attack is undeniable. Lamine Yamal is on top of the world, and the Spanish core is much more familiar with each other.

Aside from goalkeeper Mike Maignan, the only French player to appear in all eight matches is Bradley Barcola. Only Randal Kolo Muani and Isbrahima Konaté have at least six starts in this tournament, leading me to believe this team has not had as much time to gel as a unit. There are different pieces out there every single match, making it harder to get into a rhythm as a squad.

Things are much different for Spain.

Fabian Ruiz and Pedri are the only two that have taken the field in all eight matches, but up top, Álvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal have four starts, Yamal and Nico Williams both have five, and several defenders have at least four starts under their belt as well. This team is faster, more aggressive, deeper, and simply better. I trust them to get the job done today and set a date with Portugal for Sunday. Spain is trying to defend their 2023 Nations League Title, and I think the EURO Champions are on their way to doing so.

Prediction: Spain wins 2-0 (+1000)
