Antony has assisted in both playoff matches against San Diego

In the Eastern Conference, we have the No. 1 ranked Philadelphia Union facing No. 5 New York City FC, while No. 3 Inter Miami takes on No. 2 FC Cincinnati. In the West we see chalk across the board as well, as No. 2 Vancouver hosts No. 3 LAFC, and No. 4 Minnesota advances to face one of these two teams. Will the hosts keep the streak going and take down the eighth seeded Timbers?

We’ve seen four matches already between these clubs, with San Diego winning two matches, and two going to a 90 minute draw. The Timbers were fortunate enough not only to force the tie last match but also to win it in penalties to send the series back to San Diego for Match 3 tonight, but the hosts have certainly dominated nearly every contest.

San Diego has earned at least 61% of possession in all four matches against the Timbers this season, winning the corner kick battle in all four as well, and they outshot their foes in three of four. In two matches at Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego has gained an average of 67.5% possession, outshooting Portland 27-15 and earning 13 corner kicks while holding the Timbers to just four.

In fact in Match 1 of this series, the Timbers did not earn a single corner kick in their 2-1 loss. This San Diego team is the top club in the conference for a reason, and at home they will be too much to handle.

Might be getting a little cute here, but in no world do I see the Timbers netting two goals. Not only have they failed to produce offense against this specific team this season, they shouldn’t even be here. They bombarded their opponent with shots with their backs against the wall in Match 2, and I think that home whistle might’ve been a little late in order to let them equalize in the 90’+8′ minute. Regardless, coming down from that to face a motivated San Diego team on the road is going to hit them like a brick wall.

This season on the road, the Portland Timbers were shutout nine times. Nine times? Nine times…the same number of Ferris Bueller absences so far this semester. That’s over half of their away matches. They only netted two goals or more three times on the road this year, and have been held to one goal or less in their last 13 away from home.

San Diego was one of the highest scoring teams in the West this year, while Portland allowed the second most goals of playoff clubs from their conference. Offensively, Portland only netted 41 in 34 matches, while San Diego allowed just 41 throughout the regular season. This team is equipped to go far, and they are much more talented than the Timbers. They should be pissed off that they even have to play this match, so strap up and leave no doubt in front of your home crowd.

Prediction: San Diego FC Wins 2-0 (+900)
