Kelvin Yeboah and Minnesota take on San Diego at Snapdragon Stadium tonight - San Diego FC Minnesota United Picks

Kelvin Yeboah and Minnesota take on San Diego at Snapdragon Stadium tonight

Like I spoke about above, this is a single elimination match. San Diego gets to host, but things will go into extra time if needed. The other Western Conference Semifinal needed a penalty kick shootout to decide a winner, will we see the same tonight?

This is the third meeting between these clubs, and the visitor has come out on top in both previous matches. Back in June, San Diego beat Minnesota 4-2 at Allianz Field in Saint Paul. It was high scoring affair, with a San Diego own goal and penalty kick, a 75′ minute winner, and a stoppage time goal to put the nail in the coffin. Both teams managed six shots on goal, but the visitors controlled 66% of possession. However, things were different in San Diego.

They met again in September, and the Loonies got their revenge. Minnesota United secured a 3-1 victory at Snapdragon Stadium, only allowing a stoppage time goal when it was already 3-0. Things were scoreless through the 70′ minute, before the Loonies netted two just three minute apart to take the lead. But they were dominated on the stat sheet. San Diego controlled 66% of possession again, and outshot the Loonies 28-6 overall and 14-5 on frame. What will happen tonight?

Although I think San Diego wins this match in 90 minutes, I don’t see much value on them. They are very heavily juiced to do so, and the books are clearly expecting some scoring. Minnesota lost to Seattle on the road 4-2 in their lone playoff match away from home, defeating the Sounders in penalties after two draws in the contests at home. They haven’t looked great.

Joseph Rosales will not be available for Minnesota after picking up a red card in their third match against Seattle. He totaled four shots and one on target in their three previous matches.

Two goals will certainly win this game. There is little doubt in my mind that the Loonies are able to net more than one (if they even get on the scoreboard).  The top team in the West dominated both matches in the MLS Playoffs when the Portland Timbers came to town.

San Diego won the first match 2-1, winning over 71% of possession, while shutting them out 4-0 in the second meeting. Tonight I see them handling business at home, which they’ve done pretty much all season long. San Diego is 9-5-5 at home this year, scoring two goals in eight of their nine wins, and in one of their losses. Nearly half the time at home they net a couple goals and win the game, which is what I think happens this evening.

While I did say the value was with Minnesota, a bet on them on the double chance line at plus money would be worth a sprinkle if you wanted to go that route. But again, that would just be the value play. I don’t see San Diego allowing Minnesota to beat them on their home field twice this season.

Prediction: San Diego Wins 2-0 (+800)
