A Tough Road Ahead for Real Madrid
Last night in Orlando, the Club World Cup bracket was busted March Madness-style as Manchester City fell 4-3 to Saudi side Al Hilal in an extra-time thriller.
After scoring 13 goals on the way to becoming the only team to win all three group stage games, City looked like the team to beat in the tournament.
Now, things appear to be much wider open, especially with most of the favorites now residing on one side of the bracket.
On one side, Palmeiras will face Chelsea in Philadelphia, while Fluminense, who eliminated Inter Milan, will meet Al Hilal in Orlando.
On the other side, PSG and Bayern Munich will meet in Atlanta, while the winner of Real Madrid-Juventus will meet the winner of Borussia Dortmund-Monterrey at MetLife Stadium, which will also host both semifinals and the final.
While Chelsea could reach the final having played only one European foe to that point (their group featured Esperance de Tunis, Flamengo, and LAFC), Real Madrid could face all European sides in the knockout phase, along with Salzburg in the group stage.
Real Madrid also had a group showdown with Al Hilal, who held them to a 1-1 draw to open the tournament. Ultimately, if Los Blancos are to win the Club World Cup, they will have done it with the most difficult path of any of the favorites.

On paper, this looks like a rather exciting matchup.
However, the two teams could not have ended the group stage any differently. Real Madrid locked up the top spot in Group H with a 3-0 win over Salzburg, while Juve went down 5-2 to City in the Group G decider.
Of course, it has to be said that only so much can be gauged from group results. After all, City dominated Group G, only to fall at the first hurdle in the knockout phase. And Fluminense, a team who needed a second-half comeback to defeat South Korean side Ulsan HD in the group stage and didn’t score in its other two group matches, sent Inter Milan packing in the first of two major upsets yesterday.
But Juve were absolutely overwhelmed by City, and that does not bode well for having to face Real Madrid, especially if Kylian Mbappe makes his return to the team after missing the group stage due to gastroenteritis. Mbappe, who hit the 40-goal mark in his debut campaign in Madrid, was certainly missed in the group stage, but Real still scored three goals apiece against Pachuca (with 10 men) and Salzburg without him.
Can Juve stay in the game long enough to upset the odds? It’s entirely possible, but that City loss could not have been more off-putting.
