It has been the most memorable of seasons for PSG, who finally scaled the summit of European soccer.
Perhaps it was only fitting that it happened without Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who helped the club dominate Ligue 1 but couldn’t push them over the line in the UEFA Champions League.
Star-studded they certainly still are, however, and that showed in their domestic dominance, which saw them win Ligue 1 for the 11th time in 13 seasons, win the Coupe de France for the eighth time in 11 seasons, and win the French Super Cup, and their record demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final.
But with that success comes a lot of matches, and this will be PSG’s 62nd of the season (34 Ligue 1, 17 Champions League, six Coupe de France, four Club World Cup, and the French Super Cup).
Is it catching up with them? When they started the Club World Cup with a 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid, it looked like they had not skipped a beat from the 5-0 mauling of Inter Milan in Munich. However, that was followed by a stunning 1-0 loss to Botafogo and an unimpressive 2-0 win over Seattle Sounders FC.
Should that raise alarm bells for those with futures invested in the newly crowned European champions? If there is one perk to having nearly limitless resources, it’s the ability to build a squad with the kind of quality depth that only a few can assemble.
That depth is part of PSG’s success this season and why they enter the knockout phase of the tournament as one of the favorites, along with Manchester City and Real Madrid.

PSG vs. Inter Miami Prediction and Picks
If this is where the Club World Cup ends for Messi and Inter Miami, they will be left to rue a major missed opportunity.
With the minutes winding down against Palmeiras last Monday, Inter Miami held a 2-0 lead, and seeing it through would have seen them top Group A.
But see it through they did not, as Palmeiras struck in the 80th and 87th minutes to secure a 2-2 draw. The two teams finished level on points and the three head-to-head tiebreakers, but the Brazilian side won the group thanks to a superior overall goal difference.
Had Inter Miami held on to win, that would have meant a more winnable matchup with Botafogo, who finished second in Group B behind PSG and ahead of Atletico Madrid.
Instead, they have the misfortune of matching up with PSG.
You certainly can’t completely write off Inter Miami. Both Palmeiras-Botafogo and Benfica-Chelsea went to extra time yesterday, and as last night’s Panama-Honduras Gold Cup match showed, staying in the game long enough to make one chance count can go a long way.
That said, it’s hard to see Inter Miami doing just that. Messi certainly still has some magic left in him, but he is but one man, and this is a mismatch that the best that he can muster at this point in his career is likely not enough to overcome.
Might those words be eaten later today? It’s certainly possible, but don’t count on it.
