Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes: Friday Night MLS Action

Can Portland take down San Jose at home?

Antony leads Portland with six goals this season

These teams have already faced off twice this season, once in the MLS, once in the U.S. Open Cup, with San Jose hosting both matches. In early May, the Earthquakes pounded the Timbers when they came to town, beating them 4-1 in MLS play. It was 3-0 before the 30-minute mark, but Portland found one before the break. Eventually, San Jose added another in the 88′ minute to put the nail in the coffin.

Two and a half weeks later they played again in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 at PayPal Park. They played to a scoreless draw in 90 minutes, but eventually San Jose won in extra time, scoring in the 116′ minute to advance. Portland now gets to host a team who has beaten them twice, but do they have revenge in them?

Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes Best Bets Today

Can San Jose beat Portland on the road tonight?

Josef Martinez and the Earthquakes take on the Timbers tonight

Best Bets: San Jose Earthquakes +0.5 (-115) BetOnline

This is the same bet as San Jose or Draw Double Chance, meaning we cash our bet if the game ends in a tie or if the Earthquakes win. I simply think they are the better team.

Yes, they’ve already beaten them twice, but can they bring the same offensive firepower on the road? I think so.

San Jose leads the Western Conference with 34 goals in 17 games. They’ve allowed 28 goals as well, but that’s just their style of play, hence the high total in this contest. The Earthquakes prefer a run-and-gun pace in a match, resulting in a shootout most of the time. Both teams have scored in 12/17 matches involving San Jose.

As for Portland, they’ve netted 27 goals and conceded 23 in their 17 matches. They are coming off two home wins, and are unbeaten in their last eight at home. However, we only need a draw, and they’ve been letting bad teams toy with them. The Timbers beat St. Louis City SC, the Colorado Rapids, and Sporting KC all by just one goal in Portland. Two of those teams have netted less than 20 goals this season. Their offense does not compare to that of San Jose.

I expect the Earthquakes to play aggressive, even being on the road, daring the Timbers to keep up. Portland would prefer a low-scoring game, and I don’t mind that since we’ve got the draw covered as well. The Timbers will spend plenty of time defending the Earthquakes attack, and won’t be able to create chances of their own. Therefore, I see San Jose coming out on top.

Prediction: San Jose Wins 2-1 (+1000)
