San Jose leads the Western Conference with 34 goals in 17 games. They’ve allowed 28 goals as well, but that’s just their style of play, hence the high total in this contest. The Earthquakes prefer a run-and-gun pace in a match, resulting in a shootout most of the time. Both teams have scored in 12/17 matches involving San Jose.
As for Portland, they’ve netted 27 goals and conceded 23 in their 17 matches. They are coming off two home wins, and are unbeaten in their last eight at home. However, we only need a draw, and they’ve been letting bad teams toy with them. The Timbers beat St. Louis City SC, the Colorado Rapids, and Sporting KC all by just one goal in Portland. Two of those teams have netted less than 20 goals this season. Their offense does not compare to that of San Jose.
I expect the Earthquakes to play aggressive, even being on the road, daring the Timbers to keep up. Portland would prefer a low-scoring game, and I don’t mind that since we’ve got the draw covered as well. The Timbers will spend plenty of time defending the Earthquakes attack, and won’t be able to create chances of their own. Therefore, I see San Jose coming out on top.
