Panama Primed for More After Group Glory

For the first time in 13 all-time Gold Cup appearances, Panama had a perfect run through group play, as they defeated Guadeloupe, Guatemala, and Jamaica to top Group C.

Now, can they win the tournament for the first time? As it stands, Mexico, the U.S., and Canada are the top three favorites. But after reaching the Gold Cup final two years ago then reaching the final of the most recent CONCACAF Nations League, Panama is on the rise. If they were to reach the final once again, it should not be considered a surprise this time around.

A big part of that rise is attacker Ismael Diaz. The 28-year-old currently plies his trade on the club level for Universidad Catolica in Ecuador, but a move could be on the horizon after the Gold Cup. Diaz is currently the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, two coming in a 5-2 win over Guadeloupe and three in the 4-1 win over Jamaica that sealed top spot in Group C.

Also playing a key role in attack for Panama is Tomas Rodriguez, who scored in each game in the group stage.

If Diaz and Rodriguez can continue to fire in the goals, Panama can hang with and beat anyone in this tournament, including Mexico, who defeated them in the last three editions of the CONCACAF Nations League (the third-place match in 2023, the semifinals in 2024, and the final this year) and in the Gold Cup final two years ago.

Panama vs. Honduras Prediction and Picks

Honduras has something that Panama doesn’t—a Gold Cup title, which came on home soil in 1981—and some history of success.

But recent times have not been as fruitful. They have not made the Gold Cup semifinals since 2013, failed to make the semifinals of the last three editions of the CONCACAF Nations League, and their Gold Cup started with a 6-0 shellacking at the hands of Canada.

But they did rebound from that rout to make the quarterfinals, defeating El Salvador 2-0 and Curacao 2-1 to finish second in Group B behind Canada.

That said, it is difficult to see them being able to put a serious scare into Panama. It shouldn’t be a lopsided scoreline, but Panama should find the back of the net at least a couple of times, and Honduras does not have the firepower to match them. Take Panama’s team total, as well as the Panama to win + match total over 1.5 combo.
