Palmeiras vs. Chelsea Prediction & Picks: Will the Blues Bounce the Brazilians in Philly?

Palmer should be back on the field for Chelsea this weekend - EPL Picks

With Manchester City’s elimination in the round of 16, Chelsea is the only English Premier League club remaining in the FIFA Club World Cup. Will they march on to the semifinals with a victory over Palmeiras tonight? The Group A winners will be eyeing a potential all-Brazilian semifinal matchup with Fluminense, but top online sportsbooks have Chelsea as the clear favorite to move on to the last four.

Can Palmeiras Pind a Breakthrough Against Chelsea?

In the home stretch of the Premier League season, Chelsea edged Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Brentford for fourth place by collecting eight wins and a draw in their last dozen games.

In that stretch, they recorded seven clean sheets and allowed only seven goals,

That has carried over to the Club World Cup. The only team to score on the Blues from open play is Flamengo, who did it three times in a 3-1 win on June 20.

That is also the only game in which Chelsea did not manage to find the back of the net multiple times. It took extra time to do it against Benfica, but they made the most of a man advantage as they scored three times in the second extra period to secure a 4-1 victory.

The third goal of the win over Benfica was scored by Pedro Neto, his third goal of the tournament. That total puts him joint-second (with 11 other players) in the Club World Cup top scorer race, one behind Benfica’s Angel Di Maria.

With Di Maria out of the tournament, as well as the trio of City players who finished with three goals, Neto could be in the running for the Golden Boot if Chelsea reaches the final.

However, Neto’s status for the match with Palmeiras is understandably up in the air following the devastating, tragic loss of friend Diogo Jota, who died along with his brother Andre Silva in a car crash in Spain late Wednesday night. Neto was excused from training on Thursday, but he has remained with the squad, so he may well opt to play tonight.

Palmeiras vs. Chelsea Prediction and Picks

Other than the second-half stretch in which Flamengo scored three goals in a little over 20 minutes, the only goal Chelsea has allowed to this point of the Club World Cup is Di Maria’s penalty deep into second half stoppage time last Saturday.

Palmeiras has been equally tough. The only goals they allowed in their first four games came against Inter Miami to close out group play.

That said, FC Porto, Al Ahly, Inter Miami, and Botafogo are all weaker sides than what awaits tonight.

Still, it’s tough to see either side giving away much in this one, given what they have both done defensively and the stakes involved. Take the under for both the first half and for the match.

Palmeiras vs. Chelsea Prediction: Chelsea to advance
