MLS Picks and Predictions (8/30): Let’s Attack Saturday’s Soccer Slate

Alonso Martinez and New York City FC could end Charlotte's season tonight at home - MLS Picks

College Football Week 1 is here, but let’s not forget about the MLS! Saturday brings us 10 matches across Major League Soccer, and despite not having success in the EPL this morning (with one play pending), we had to attack the American footy betting board. Let’s waste no time and get into our favorite picks to sweat amongst all the action on the gridiron this Saturday evening.

We’ve had some success in this league so far this season, so let’s keep it going today!

Major League Soccer: Saturday’s Predictions August 30

New York City FC vs. D.C. United: MLS Picks

Hannes Wolf and New York City take on D.C. United tonight at Yankee Stadium - MLS Picks

Hannes Wolf and New York City take on D.C. United tonight at Yankee Stadium

Best Bet: New York City FC -1 (-114) BetOnline

New York City FC hosts D.C. United, a team they already drew with early this year. It was a scoreless contest in the Nation’s Capitol earlier this season, but recently New York City has been red hot.

They’ve won three straight MLS matches overall, and are unbeaten in their last five MLS contests with four outright wins and a draw. Going back even further, in their last 10 matches, New York City FC are 7-1-2, and tonight they host the worst team in the league.

D.C. United are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. They are allowing a conference worst 1.89 goals per match this season, which is also third worst in the entire MLS. On the road, that number balloons up to 2.14 goals allowed per contest, which is why I trust the hosts to get the job done in dominant fashion.

On the flip side, New York City FC are scoring 1.42 goals per game, with that number increasing to 1.75 when playing at home. New York City are coming off a shutout win, and have allowed less than two goals in four of their last five matches. I have also sprinkled on New York City FC ML and Both Teams to Score No at (+200), thinking they get the job done in a shutout.

We have push potential backing them by one goal, and will even profit with a win and a push if they win 1-0.

Prediction: New York City FC Wins 2-0 (+725)

Nashville SC vs. Atlanta United: MLS Picks

Hany Muktar and Nashville are nearly unstoppable at home - MLS Picks

Hany Muktar and Nashville are nearly unstoppable at home

Best Bet: Nashville SC -1 (-111) BetOnline

Nashville SC host Atlanta United, whom they played to a 1-1 draw earlier this season on the road. Atlanta scored very early in that contest, with the visitors finding an equalizer late in the second half to salvage a point. But now Nashville is at home.

They are ranked No. 3 in the Eastern Conference while Atlanta is No. 14. This is a classic David vs. Goliath matchup, but we are siding with the home giants tonight.

Nashville is an absolute cheat code at GEODIS Park. In Music City this season, they have played 14 MLS matches. Nashville has five straight outright wins at home, outscoring their foes 12-3 during that stretch. Over the course of the entire season, Nashville is 10-3-1 at home this season. They have lost just one time, shutting out their opponents seven times, and outscoring their visitors 30-11.

Let’s run those numbers.

Nashville shuts out their opponent half the time. They average 2.14 goals per home match this season, while only allowing 0.79. Like I said, this team is a cheat code in Music City. Atlanta United come into this match giving up 1.81 goals per contest, and they do not have a road win yet this season.

I certainly don’t think they start tonight, and I don’t think they earn a point either. We are rocking with some push potential if Nashville only wins by one goal (like New York City above), but I trust the hosts to put multiple balls in the back of the net to cover this spread for us.

Prediction: Nashville SC Wins 2-0 (+725)

Toronto FC vs. CF Montreal: MLS Picks

Theo Corbeanu and Toronto take on Montreal at home tonight - MLS Picks

Theo Corbeanu and Toronto take on Montreal at home tonight

Best Bet: Toronto/Montreal Under 2.5 (+114) BetOnline

Let’s talk this one out. Toronto dominated Montreal earlier this season on the road, beating them 6-1. Montreal are allowing a 1.79 goals per contest this season, but I expect their defense to be much better tonight.

You can certainly call this a rivalry matchup, and that’s usually when teams play more cautious and conservative. Considering how bad their back line has been this year, on the road, Montreal should focus on making sure Toronto doesn’t go for six goals like they did last time.

Montreal has been playing better recently, going unbeaten in four straight league contests, and have only allowed five total goals in those matches. Offensively, neither team scores a ton, both going for exactly one goal per match over the course of 27 or 28 matches this season.

Toronto’s back line is rock solid as well, giving up just over one goal per match this season. In what should feel like a rivalry game, I see this being a very sweaty 1-1 draw to cash our under.

Prediction: 1-1 Draw (+600)
