The MLS regular season is almost over, and the race for postseason positioning is well under way. Unfortunately for one of these teams, it won’t matter, as Toronto FC heads out west for a meaningless match (for them) against LAFC. The Canadien side has already been eliminated from playoff contention with just two matches remaining, and are just playing for pride tonight. However, the hosts are shooting up the Western Conference table, currently sitting in fourth place with an extra match or two in hand, so they have a shot at taking the top spot before all is said and done. Like I said, Toronto’s season is over, after these next two matches. They sit at No. 12 on the Eastern Conference table, but are tied for No. 2 in goals allowed, giving up just 40 this season in 32 matches. However they are the second worst offensive team in the entire MLS, scoring just 33 goals on the year. That’s a recipe for missing the playoffs, which is exactly what happened.
LAFC is No. 4 in the West, just two points behind Minnesota United. They are also just four points behind the Vancouver Whitecaps and San Diego FC, but have an extra match (or two) left. Minnesota and San Diego have one match remaining, Vancouver has two, while LAFC will STILL have two remaining after tonight. Three points at home could propel them to third in the West and set them up with a real shot at taking the entire conference.

Toronto have not won on the road in seven straight away matches, but they have earned five straight draws. Unfortunately for them, LAFC needs this win much more, and they are in fantastic form.
They’ve allowed just 37 goals on the year while netting 61 of their own in 31 matches, and have five straight outright wins. They are also unbeaten in eight of their last nine MLS matches. The midseason signing of Son Heung-Min has been huge, and I see it paying off tonight in a dominating win.

LAFC is going to leave no doubt tonight. Their defense will be sound and their offense will make sure they get the job done. The hosts are coming off two straight shutout wins, beating Atlanta 1-0 at home and St. Louis City 3-0 on the road. It would be three straight if they didn’t give up at 14′ minute goal to Real Salt Lake before netting four of their own to win.
I also endorse LAFC -1.5 (+130) for this reason and have split my unit on both bets. The team from LA has 11 shutout wins this year, and have won by two goals on 11 occasions as well, including their past five matches. They added Son Heung-Min who has made an immediate impact on an already stacked lineup, making them one of the most dangerous attacks in all of the MLS.
There is zero reason for them to leave any doubt tonight against a much weaker Toronto team. I am not worried about the visitors finding the back of the net at all, as Hugo Lloris is tied for second in the league for clean sheets. Sure, Toronto is in a dangerous spot with nothing to lose, but I trust the hosts to be very focused, knowing how much this extra thee points could mean. The last thing they want is to let in a cheap goal early and battle from behind the rest of the way.
Look for them to start off strong, controlling the match from start to finish.
