LAFC vs. Austin FC Betting Insights

The No. 3 and No. 6 teams go head to head in the City of Angels to begin this playoff series. In two head to head meetings this year, Austin FC was victorious in both. We saw a 1-0 draw in each contest, the first one in LA back in March, with the hosts picking up another much needed victory in Texas in mid-October. Neither match saw that much offensive action, and I’ll be hoping for something similar tonight.

LAFC’s signing of Son Heung-Min has been huge for their attack. In just 10 matches, Son has scored nine goals and added two assists, ranking second on the team in scoring, only behind Denis Bouanga who had 24 in 31 matches. The hosts’ 65 goals scored this season ranked second in the Western Conference and No. 4 in the entire MLS, plus the back line was plenty strong as well. Can they finally turn it on and get a win over Austin FC?

Best Bet: LAFC ML/Under 3.5 (+138) BetOnline

It’s very tough to beat a team three times in a single season, even though Inter Miami proved that wrong by beating Nashville in their first MLS Playoff contest. Tonight at home, I think LAFC certainly have the firepower to get by Austin. For starters, they didn’t have either Son of Bouanga in the final meeting. Immediately they have a better offense tonight, as the -215 moneyline suggests.

We saw just 1-0 games with four and six total shots on target in each contest. Plus, the last five head to head meetings have stayed under 2.5 total goals. LAFC ranks top three in goals allowed in the West this year, while Austin was dead last in the conference (third worst in the MLS) in goals scored, yet somehow still made the postseason. The hosts ended the year with three straight home victories, two of which were shutouts. In fact, 8/17 home matches for LAFC this season saw a home victory with the total staying under 3.5, and the same can be said about 7/17 of Austin FC’s away matches. I think at +138 this is certainly worth a stab.

We’ve seen unders start to be trendy in the MLS Playoffs as well, as the last three and four of the last five have stayed under 3.5. We also had a scoreless match until the 70′ minute between the Philadelphia Union and the Chicago Fire, before a 2-2 finish with a goal in stoppage time as well.

Bottom line, LAFC is the much stronger team, they have a prolific offense and a very strong defense. At home, they should have no problem beating an inferior Austin team that struggles to score, even if their back line has carried them this season.

Prediction: LAFC Wins 2-0 (+600)
