We’ve reached the Leagues Cup Semifinals which happen today, and although we started out with 36 total teams, we are down to the final four. We had all 18 clubs from Liga MX face off against 18 representatives from the MLS, all clubs playing matches against teams from the other league. We ended up with four teams on top of each table who met in the quarterfinals, but it was an MLS avalanche from there, leaving us with four American teams in the semifinals. Two teams from the same state face off tonight, as Inter Miami host Orlando City in our first semifinal matchup. Let’s get in to our favorite picks.

Inter Miami vs. Orlando City Leagues Cup Betting Odds

Can Orlando City beat Inter Miami for a third time this season?
Let’s start by looking at how these teams got here.
Inter Miami took down Atlas, Necaxa, and Pumas UNAM, needing penalties to do so in just one match. They outscored their opponents 8-4 during those three matches, and it was enough to move on. In the quarterfinals, they needed two penalty kicks to get past Tigres UANL, and despite some controversial reffing down the stretch, Inter Miami came out on top.
Now, Miami will also be without their manager Javier Mascherano, as he was ejected in the semifinals with a red card. However, the man still found a way to be involved as he was caught talking on the phone with his assistant coaches. Nevertheless, he won’t be on the sidelines tonight.
As for Orlando City, they actually played the same three teams Inter Miami did. Orlando City opened with a PK shootout loss to Pumas UNAM, but then beat Atlas and Necaxa to advance. Orlando City outscored their opponents 9-3 in their three matches. They then faced Toluca in the semifinals, and despite allowed 15 shot attempts compared to their four, Orlando City held on for a scoreless draw, and won the match in penalties.
Now the two Florida teams meet for a shot at the Leagues Cup Final on Sunday.

Javier Mascherano will not be on the sidelines tonight for Inter Miami

Now, there is going to be a third place match on Sunday, because the top three finishers in this tournament automatically qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup, so motivation will be very high. The teams have already played two competitive matches this season, with Orlando City winning both of them.
Back in May, Orlando City shutout Inter Miami on the road, winning 3-0. In case you’re curious, yes, Leo Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets all played 90 minutes of that match. More recently, just 17 days ago on August 10, Orlando took down Miami again, this time at home, winning 4-1. Now, Messi did not play in that match, but Miami still had Suarez, Alba, and new signing Rodrigo De Paul out there the entire time.
The talk of the town tonight is the fact that Messi will play, and I expect Miami to get their revenge.

Luis Suarez and Inter Miami take on Orlando in the Leagues Cup Semifinals tonight

Not only do we have the double revenge spot at home. Orlando has beaten Miami the past two meetings, and the hosts haven’t won against their in-state rival since March 2, 2024. In front of their home town, look for Miami to show no mercy.
But we are also putting on our tin foil hat.
Inter Miami winning the Leagues Cup is great for the MLS. The signing of Messi and his other high caliber teammates has not only put Inter Miami on the map, but the entire MLS is getting international eyeballs on them. More and more big name, European footballers are coming to America to play their final few seasons in the MLS, upping the value of the entire league.
We have already seen some questionable actions from the MLS (and the refs) in order to benefit Inter Miami, the league’s baby. They’ll want to keep that up by doing everything they can to make sure they get a picture of Lionel Messi lifting the Leagues Cup trophy.
In their semifinal match, there was plenty of questionable officiating. Not only did Inter Miami need two penalty kicks to win after not scoring from the field, Javier Mascherano was so clearly communicating with his sideline after being ejected, which is at the very least frowned upon, but I’m pretty certain it’s against the rules.
Regardless, without Mascherano on the sidelines, Messi and company are capable of playing on their own. Look for the Inter Miami players, and those pulling the strings, to do anything in their power to win this game. I’ll test out my conspiracy theory for even money.
Prediction: Inter Miami Wins 2-1 (+775)
