2019 World Cup Recap
The 2019 Women’s World Cup took place across France during June and early July during the summer of 2019. This was a monumental tournament for a couple of reasons.
For starters, this was the first women’s world cup that involved the use of Video Assistant Referee system, also known as VAR. This was also the second, and final, edition that would host 24 teams.
In 2023, the Women’s World Cup will expand to 32 teams and welcome them all to Australia and New Zealand.
Now, twenty four teams traveled to France but only one team was able to be crowned Women’s World Cup Champion in 2019!
After a riveting group stage, round of 16, and Quarterfinals, we were just left with four teams for the semifinals.
The United States defeated England by a score of 2-1, with all three goals happening within the first half hour of play. What an exciting game that must have been!
On the other side, the Netherlands needed extra time to defeat Sweden 1-0. The Swedes would go on to defeat England, and claim third place of the tournament.
The United States faced the Netherlands in the 2019 Women’s World Cup Final. After a scoreless first half, the USWNT was able to draw a penalty in the 61st minute, and Rose Lavelle put it home to go up 1-0. Just a few minutes later, Megan Rapinoe would add a second goal, securing the title for the United States.
The United States became the 2nd women’s team to win back to back World Cup trophies. This year, the US look to make it a three-peat and have a great chance at doing so.

Listed below are the eight groups for the 2023 Women’s World Cup! Groups are drew at random prior to the tournament.
What sticks out to me the most is the fact that both 2019 Women’s World Cup Finalists will play in the same group. Obviously this is simply random, however it does make one raise an eyebrow.

This is set to be one of the most exciting World Cup’s in history. Not only are we getting a full 32 team tournament, but this tournament is the most ticketed Women’s World Cup in history.

If a team with odds greater than 100-1 win the Women’s World Cup, I will gladly tip my cap to them, but truthfully, I believe this stays with one of those Top 7 competitors.
Yes, the Netherlands at 25-1 might look a little tasty given they were runner-ups four years ago. However, they are playing in a group with the team that ruined their title hopes, and again, that was four years ago.
Plenty has changed for many of these teams.
2023 Women’s World Cup Futures
If I’m a betting man, which I certainly am, I think it comes down to the United States and England.
These are without a doubt the top two teams in women’s soccer at the moment, and it’s really their tournament to lose.
The United States will be hungry for the first ever three peat, while England is eager to secure their first World Cup title after winning the Women’s Euro in 2022.
As far as a dark horse, Australia at +1200 could be sneaky with arguably the world’s best player in Sam Kerr. As the host, they could have some extra magic in their boots.
Overall, it’s going to be an exciting tournament!
