The FIFA Club World Cup opened with a goalless draw, but that did not become a regular sight throughout the remainder of the group stage. In fact, 144 total goals were scored in the 48 group games, an average of three per game. The scoring has kept up as the tournament has entered the knockout phase, but who will claim Golden Boot honors? Who Has Scored the Most Goals at This Year’s Club World Cup?
Four goals – Angel Di Maria, Benfica
Benfica’s tournament participation ended in the round of 16, as they fell 4-1 to Chelsea in extra time. They reached extra time thanks to a 95th-minute penalty by Di Maria, whose four Club World Cup goals all came from the spot.
With the likes of Kane still in the tournament and certain to play at least one more game, it would seem unlikely that Di Maria will remain atop the Club World Cup scoring charts.
Three goals – Six players, including Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)
With the round of 16 more than halfway in the books, Kane is one of six players with three Club World Cup goals. Half of that contingent–Kane, Jamal Musiala, and Michael Olise–all represent Bayern Munich, who will face European champions PSG in the quarterfinals Saturday in Atlanta.
Also in that group is Chelsea’s Pedro Neto, who scored just six goals in 45 games for Chelsea prior to the Club World Cup but has half of that total in just four games in this tournament. From a value perspective, Neto may offer the best value on the board for a non-Kane or Haaland option. Chelsea has a fairly favorable quarterfinal matchup against Palmeiras, so you have to like their chances of reaching at least the semifinals and giving Neto at least two more games to add to his total.
Two goals – 22 players, including Erling Haaland (Manchester City)
Haaland is one of four City players with two goals, with Doku, Foden, and Ilkay Gundogan also finding the back of the net twice in the group stage.
With City facing Al Hilal in the round of 16, Fluminense ahead in the quarters, and either Palmeiras or Chelsea the matchup for the semis, one of the City players could be worth backing.
