Will Kelly and the Lionesses repeat as EURO Champions?

Both of these countries have snagged some hardware over the past couple of major competitions, with England winning the 2022 Women’s EURO and Spain the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Now one of the two will add another trophy to the case following Sunday’s match.

These two have already played twice this calendar year in the UEFA Women’s Nations League. In late February, England beat Spain by a score of 1-0 at Wembley Stadium, despite the Spanish dominating most of the match. Then, in early June, Spain got their revenge, beating England 2-1 after falling down 1-0 just 20 minutes into the contest.

Spain has been rolling through anyone who stood in their way this tournament, and while England has been skating by, they have played much tougher competition.

The Lionesses had to battle through the Group of Death, losing to No. 10 France, but beating No. 11 the Netherlands and No. 30 Wales. After that, they got past No. 6 Sweden in penalties, and beat No. 13 Italy by equalizing and forcing extra time on the last kick of the match.

Spain beat No. 22 Portugal, No. 20 Belgium, and No. 13 Italy in group stage, and then went on to take down No. 23 Switzerland and No. 3 Germany in the semifinals. England has seen higher caliber teams, but Spain’s domination is worth talking about.

I am very high on Spain, and low on the Lionesses, because quite frankly, England should not be in this match.

They were down 2-0 to Sweden in the quarterfinals. Sure, they battled, forcing extra time and PKs, but then the Swedes had two separate chances to seal the win, and missed from the spot. Sweden then failed to keep things going, despite all of their chances. In the semis, England was down early and struggled to find an equalizer all match long.

Then, finally in the 90’+6′ Michelle Agyemang forced extra time, while Chloe Kelly netted a controversial penalty as time was expiring to move them along.

But today, I think they have met their match.

Best Bet: Spain ML (-133) BetOnline

This is a little juicy, and we will need Spain to win in 90 minutes to cash our bet, but I have more faith in them than England.

Spain has five absolutely dominating victories. They have outscored opponents 17-3 this tournament, giving up just 10 total shots on target (two per match), and have retained at least 67% of possession in every single contest. Sure, they needed extra time to finally find the net against Germany, but I fear the Lionesses will be too caught up in their offensive tactics.

Although I lean with Spain if this becomes a shootout, England will likely try to be the aggressor and take them out of their element. Regardless, the Spanish defense is ready for the challenge, and the offense is primed for another multi-goal performance, However, England’s defense could hold strong.

Ultimately, I don’t think it gets out of hand, but I do think Spain gets the job done in regulation this afternoon.

Prediction: Spain Wins 1-0 (+600)
