Canada Seeks Rare Semifinal Appearance
Since winning the Gold Cup in 2000, Canada has made the semifinals only three times. Most recently, they made the last four in 2021, where they lost to Mexico on a goal that came in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
Two years ago, inexplicably finishing second in their group due to draws with Guadeloupe and Guatemala resulted in a quarterfinal matchup with the USMNT, who advanced on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.
This time around, they did not end up in that position, finishing a point clear of Honduras in Group B thanks to two wins and a draw.
The reward is a matchup with Guatemala, who finished second behind Panama in Group C with two wins and a loss.
While Canada hasn’t been in the Gold Cup semifinals very often in recent history, Guatemala has not been at all in nearly 30 years. The country’s most recent appearance in the last four of this tournament was in 1996, when they lost to Mexico in the semifinals and to the USA in the third-place game.

Canada vs. Guatemala Prediction and Picks
In group play, Canada recorded wins over Honduras and El Salvador but missed out a perfect run due to allowing a 94th-minute equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Curacao.
That result might raise alarm bells for some, but it’s also worth noting that the USA was not convincing against Haiti, Mexico struggled to put away Suriname, and Costa Rica had to come back to win against both the Dominican Republic and Suriname.
So, there isn’t too much to read into that result, especially when the team who performed the best in group play, Panama, exited the tournament last night in an upset defeat to Honduras.
That said, this does represent a tricky tilt for the Canucks. Though they are not fielding their strongest possible side with regular captain Alphonso Davies at the Club World Cup with Bayern Munich, expectations are reasonably high when their rivals are fielding weakened squads.
Will Guatemala be content to sit back, invite pressure, and play “bend, don’t break” soccer? Honduras bent but didn’t break against Panama, who had nearly 70% of the possession, and it paid off in the end.
It won’t take much for Guatemala to muster more than the solitary shot tallied by the losing side in last night’s Mexico-Saudi Arabia match, but it’s difficult to see Guatemala spending much time in Canada’s half. And that is without noting that Guatemala has not scored against Canada in the last five head-to-head meetings.
So, that brings two plays into the equation, and both will hit if Canada can keep Guatemala off the scoresheet for the sixth straight time.
Canada vs. Guatemala Prediction: Canada to win
Canada vs. Guatemala Picks: Canada to record a shutout win (-135 at Bovada) and Guatemala team total under 0.5 (-160 at BetOnline)
