Palmeiras face domestic opponent, Botafogo in the Round of 16
FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16 Matchups
Saturday’s Matches
Palmeiras vs. Botafogo
Two teams in the middle of their domestic season match up as the Brazilian squads go head to head. The clubs played to a scoreless draw back in March in the Brazilian Serie A, while both have also only conceded two goals in their group stage matches.
Palmeiras are higher up on the domestic table than their opponent, which may be all the motivation Botafogo needs to win. Palmeiras actually scored two goals in the final 10 minutes against Inter Miami to force a draw, secure a point and win the group, thus giving us this matchup in the Round of 16.
Benfica vs. Chelsea
The Portuguese side beat Bayern Munich in their final match to top their group and now face Chelsea of the EPL. The Blues should’ve arguably won their group but were taken down by Flamengo. Benfica wasn’t really tested besides their contest with the Germans.
The offense is netting three goals per game in this tournament so far, and Chelsea’s defense has certainly had some question marks, especially in their meltdown against the Group C Winners.
Sunday’s Matches
Paris Saint-Germain vs. Inter Miami
This one will be phenomenal. Inter Miami and Lionel Messi face his former squad and current UCL Champions, PSG. This will be must watch TV at noon eastern on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. I expect a high total that will probably find a way to go over.
Flamengo vs. Bayern Munich
Flamengo is on top of the Brazilian Serie A currently and won their group after beating Chelsea, but Bayern Munich is a different animal. Plus, they’ll have some intangibles on their side after losing to Benfica and finishing second in their group.
While Flamengo has had a great tournament so far, I could see them falling to Munich on Sunday.

Yan Sommer and Inter Milan won Group E
Monday’s Matches
Inter Milan vs. Fluminense
The UCL Runner Ups ended up topping their group and eliminating Argentine side, River Plate, in their final match. Now they face Fluminense who is currently ranked No. 6 on the Brazilian Serie A table. They played Borussia Dortmund to a scoreless draw to open the tournament, finding four other points to advance.
Manchester City vs. Al Hilal
The only team to win all three of their matches in group stage faces the only non-European team from the Eastern hemisphere to advance in Al Hilal. The Saudi side won their final match and jumped RB Salzburg thanks to some help from Real Madrid. As for Manchester City, the EPL giants are looking to get back to that form this year.
Their transfers are impacting the game immediately and with former Ballon d’Or winner Rodri back on the pitch, City is a frightening foe for anyone.
Tuesday’s Matches
Real Madrid vs. Juventus
The Spaniards and Italians battle in the Round of 16 after Real Madrid topped their group, and Juventus lost to Manchester City. Juventus’ offense is one of three who netted double digit goals in Group Stage (Man City & Bayern Munich), but I still think Real Madrid have the advantage, especially after seeing the Italians go down in flames in their final match.
Borussia Dortmund vs. Monterrey
Another German team advanced to our bracket and face the lone Mexican side in Monterrey. Dortmund scored five goals and allowed three but still won their group, while Monterrey gave up just one goal and scored five, finishing second to Inter Milan.
I will more than likely be looking to target the underdog to pull off the upset in this match next week.

- Manchester City +280
- Paris Saint-Germain +325
- Real Madrid +500
- Bayern Munich +700
- Chelsea +1100
- Inter Milan +1600
- Palmeiras +2800
- Borussia Dortmund +3300
- Juventus +3300
- Benfica +3300
- Flamengo +3300
- Botafogo +4000
- Fluminense +5000
- Al Hilal +6600
- Inter Miami 100-1
- Monterrey 100-1
While I think this is Manchester City’s tournament to lose, Real Madrid at 5-1 is pretty tasty. I like them in a potential semifinal match against the UCL Champions, and think they have the stuff to get by Juventus and Borussia Dortmund (who probably lose to Monterrey anyways).
Otherwise, I do like Palmeiras to Reach the Semifinals at (+280). They should show Botafogo who is boss in their domestic match in the Round of 16, and then I like them to pull off the upset against Chelsea or Benfica. Chelsea have not impressed me in this tournament, and I think the Brazilian squad could hang with either team they may face.
