Can the USMNT Win Without Pulisic?

US soccer star Christian Pulisic, who will miss the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup

Due to injuries, withdrawals, and conflicts with the Club World Cup, the US will not field its strongest possible squad at the Gold Cup.

The most notable absence by far is AC Milan star Christian Pulisic, who opted not to play in the tournament to rest after a grueling campaign for club and country.

How will the absence of Pulisic and other notable names like Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, Antonee Robinson, and Tim Weah affect the USMNT’s chances to win an eighth Gold Cup title?

Being outscored 6-1 in friendly losses to Turkey (2-1) and Switzerland (4-0) does not inspire any confidence at either end of the pitch. But there is a lot of talent in this squad even with the numerous absences, and the group stage should allow them to gel and give Mauricio Pochettino an idea of his best starting XI for the knockout rounds.

That said, the absences limit how worthwhile it is to back this U.S. team before the tournament starts. Taking them to win Group D (at -285 odds at BetOnline) is especially off limits, as the second group match against Saudi Arabia is the kind of match that could trip up a team that might find it hard to score against decent opposition.

Gold Cup Predictions and Picks

Gold Cup Winner Prediction and Pick: Mexico

Mexico’s squad features a wealth of experience, with eight players with 50+ international caps and three with 100+ caps in goalkeeper Memo Ochoa, Jesus Gallardo, and forward Raul Jimenez.

Their experience and quality should see them have a smooth stroll through to the knockout rounds, and if they play like they are capable, they offer the best betting value to win the tournament. There are too many questions right now about the USMNT, Canada likely lacks the overall quality to win the tournament, and no one else has a real shot.

Best Gold Cup Group Stage Pick: Panama to win Group C (-110 at Bovada)

While Saudi Arabia could potentially pose a potential problem for the U.S. in Group D, the biggest toss-up, at least in terms of pre-tournament odds, is Group C, where Panama enters with a slight edge over Jamaica.

In the last year, Panama won two games at last year’s Copa America, reached the final of the CONCACAF Nations League (which they lost to Mexico on a late, late goal), and beaten the U.S. twice. Don’t be surprised if they end up in the final of the Gold Cup.
