The Sweepstakes Players and Gaming Association (SPGA) has officially merged with the Sweepstakes Gaming Legal Alliance (SGLA) following the passage of AB 831.
This bill, which raised new concerns for sweepstakes casinos in California, prompted the groups to unite. Their shared goal is to strengthen advocacy efforts and present a unified voice against sweeping regulatory challenges.
According to industry observers, the merger creates one of the largest advocacy organizations for sweepstakes casinos nationwide. Both groups had previously operated independently, but AB 831’s implications made cooperation essential.
The SPGA, known for defending player interests, now joins forces with SGLA’s strong legal advocacy base. Together, they aim to protect consumer access and ensure the sweepstakes model remains viable in California.
SGLA: The Fight for Sweepstakes Continues
The passage of AB 831 in the Senate has intensified concerns across the sweepstakes casino industry. Currently, the bill now just needs California Governor Gavin Newsom’s signature to become law.
The SGLA has historically played a central role in protecting sweepstakes casinos from legal and legislative threats. With the merger, its ranks grow significantly, gaining not only more members but also broader political reach.
Moreover, the expanded alliance positions itself as the lead opponent of the California sweepstakes ban proposed in AB 831.
“It is incredibly disappointing that the California Assembly decided to pass AB 831,” Duncan said after the vote. “This bill will worsen economic disparities among California tribes, push the state backwards in terms of digital innovation, and strip $1 billion out of the state’s economy,” Duncan added.
Unless vetoed, the bill will automatically become law via a pocket signature.
Sweepstakes Battle Expected to Intensify
Industry experts note that this opposition will likely intensify as lawmakers debate further restrictions. The SGLA’s strengthened coalition intends to lobby aggressively, educate legislators, and highlight the economic benefits of sweepstakes casinos.
Its leaders believe that the merged organization can now apply greater pressure with sweepstakes-related initiatives in California.
By combining legal expertise and grassroots support, the alliance stands better prepared to challenge future attempts to restrict the sweepstakes casino industry.
Supporters argue that this unified front sends a strong message: sweepstakes casinos remain popular, legitimate, and deserving of fair treatment.
