We head to be ole Texas for tonight’s matchup. The San Jose Sharks take the ice against the Dallas Stars tonight at the American Airlines Center. This is the first of three matchups between the two this season.

Center Macklin Celebrini is having a hell of a start to his sophomore year. The kid has 14 goals and 26 assists, tied for second in the league for most points with Connor McDavid. He was shut down last game vs Washington, so I expect to see a bounce back from him.

Despite ranking in the bottom of the league for goals scored and shots on goal allowed per game, they’re hanging in there and finding ways to win. Their defense is pretty much the same for the same two categories, ranking at the bottom for goals allowed and shots on goal allowed per game.

Goalie Yaroslav Askarov is expected to get the start. He is 10-7-1 this season with a 3.15 GAA and a .905 save percentage. Askarov will most definitely be tested tonight vs. the Stars.

Dallas will start Oettinger and try to stop San Jose at home

The Stars are 18-5-5 this year and second in the Central Division. They come into this game off a shutout win over the Devils on Wednesday. Dallas is 7-1-2 in their last ten games and 8-4-1 at home.

This team is buzzing right now and will have a fun test from San Jose. Dallas ranks in the top five of the league for goals scored, power play conversion and shooting percentage. They only rank twenty sixth for shots on goal per game, but they shoot so well that they don’t need that many shots.

Dallas puts up a pretty good defensive wall. It starts in net with the team ranking third best in goals allowed per game. Their penalty kill isn’t as good as their power play and they’re allowing just under thirty shots on goal per game.

Even though Dallas is on a roll, I don’t count the Sharks out that quickly. We’re getting great value for the game to end by one goal and that is what I’m rolling with. We should see a lot of goals and San Jose is due for a few after their last game.

Oettinger will definitely be a problem for San Jose, but they’ve gotten to him before. This young core is really maturing into a great group and starting to be able to play with the best of the best. Watch for Celebrini and Will Smith to be heavily involved as usual.

I like for Askarov to get over his saves line, which should be around 26-28 saves. He should see easily over 30 shots like they allow per game, especially vs. Dallas. Hopefully he’s able to save a bunch to keep the Sharks in this game.

Another play I like is for Will Smith to get 3 or more shots on goal. He’s coming off a stinker, but the kids been lighting it up, hitting in five out of his last six games. Sprinkling his anytime goal is worth it, he’s scored five goals in his last four games.
