Both teams tonight aren’t off to the best starts, but one team is coming around. The San Jose Sharks will take on the New York Islanders at UBS Arena tonight. This the first of two meetings between the two teams this season.
New York is 2-3-0 to start the season and on a two-game winning streak after starting off the season 0-3. They’re still last in their division, but it’s early. They come into off a win over the Senators on Saturday by a score of 5-4.
Rookie sensation Matthew Schaefer records his fifth point in five games. He is the only player to ever record a point in each of his first five games. Kid came with a lot of hype as the number one pick, and he looks great so far.
Goalie Ilya Sorokin is expected in net. He is 1-3 with a 4.14 GAA and .861 save percentage. The Islanders really need him to get in gear because they are actually providing offensive help as they didn’t in the past.

San Jose still on the hunt for their first win of the season

Sharks winger William Eklund reacts after scoring a goal vs. the Islanders.
The Sharks are off to a 0-3-2 start and are 7th in the Pacific Division. They’re still looking for their first win and to break this game five game skid. San Jose comes into this game off a loss to the Penguins on Saturday.
Their offense is ranking at the bottom of the league currently for goals scored and shots on goal per game. San Jose has looked decent on the power play with a 28% conversion rate. Macklin Celebrini and co. are having a hard time getting going.
On defense, it’s like it doesn’t exist. They rank last in the league for goals allowed and shots on goal allowed per game. Their penalty kill isn’t as good as their power play either and they commit around five penalties a game.
Goalie Yaroslav Askarov is expected to start. He is 0-1-1 so far with a 6.45 GAA and a .833 save percentage. Rough two games for Askarov and could have another rough one in front of him. Let’s check out the odds and get into the Sharks vs. Islanders picks.

We’re rooting for goals here. Both teams are allowing a ton of goals per game, and the Islanders are actually scoring a bunch themselves. I think we see a shootout in this game with the way Sorokin is playing as well.
The Sharks are scoring almost three goals a game and are about to face a goalie who’s allowing over four per game. The Islanders defense has not proven to be strong, so if that continues plus the Islanders offense, it equals goals. Not to mention the Isles are facing a guy who’s allowing over 6 goals per game.
I like for Bo Horvat to get 3 or more shots on goal. He’s coming off a miss but hit in his previous four games. Horvat has four goals in his last two games as well, so this is a great spot for him to score as well. Sprinkle that anytime goal.
The other play we’re going to keep riding, rinse and repeat. Give me Matthew Schaefer to record a point. It should come out around -110 now that it’s hit in five straight games. This is kid loved on this team and playing major minutes. Expect him to keep up this play and be heavily involved.
