Two of the league’s best from up North take the ice tonight. The Edmonton Oilers will take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena. This is the first of two matchups between them this season.
Edmonton is 14-11-6 this year and are fourth in the Pacific Division. They come into this game off a 4-1 win over the Red Wings on Thursday night. The Oilers are 5-3-2 in their last ten games and 6-8-3 on the road so far.
Offense has been cranking for Edmonton and as they should be with this roster. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are off to crazy starts with 40 plus points each. The team ranks fifth in goals scored per game and has the second-best power play in the league.
They’ve struggled between the pipes and made a big trade today. Edmonton sent goalie Stuart Skinner to Pittsburgh in exchange for Tristin Jarry. The Oilers rank in the bottom of the league for goals allowed but keep the shot count down, so definitely some leak goaltending.
Right now, we’re expected to see Calvin Pickard in net, unless Jarry gets cleared to play. Pickard is 3-3-2 this season with a 2.25 GAA and a .933 save percentage. Jarry will come in and be the starter so he very well could be ready in time.

Toronto will try to get back in the win column tonight at home

Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews rips a shot at the Oilers goaltender.
The Leafs are 14-11-5 so far and fifth in the Atlantic Division. They come into this game off an overtime loss to the Sharks on Thursday. Toronto is 5-2-3 in their last ten games and are 9-4-5 at home this year.
Toronto’s offense has definitely been interesting. They rank sixth in goals scored per game and third in shooting percentage. That good shooting percentage makes up for ranking towards the bottom of the league for shots on goal per game.
Their power play is second worse in the league, which is kind of surprising. Not sure if it has anything to do with the departure of Mitch Marner in the offseason, but they definitely need to work on it. Their penalty kill is better though, ranking eleventh in the league.
Defense has been shotty to say the least. Definitely never know what team you’re getting. They rank nineteenth in the league for goals allowed and second to the last in shots on goal allowed per game.
In net, we’re expected to see goalie Dennis Hildeby. He is 2-2-3 this season with a 2.25 GAA and a .933 save percentage. Let’s check out the odds and get into the Oilers vs. Leafs picks.

Both teams’ matchup well on paper and almost have the same record. I think this is a good spot for the Oilers to come in a steal a win from the Leafs. If Tristan Jarry ends up playing, I really love this play even more.
It’s a good game for the Oilers to keep the momentum going. Whenever McDavid and Matthews face off, it’s a hell of a game too. But the Edmonton offense is buzzing coming out of last game and could keep it going. Toronto will need to play smart hockey as well to keep the Edmonton power play on the bench.
I like Connor McDavid in this game to rip puck. He had 9 and 4 shots on goal in his last two games vs the Leafs last year. His 3 or more shots on goal may be juiced so we’ll go with his 4 or more. I also like for him to record 2 or more points.
Give me Dennis Hildeby to record over his save line. With the amount the Oilers put up along with the amount that the Leafs allow tells me we see at least 30 shots on goal from the Oilers. His saves line should be around 28 saves.
