Tonight, we head to the nation’s capital for a faceoff between two of the league’s best. The Edmonton Oilers head down to take on the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. This is the first of two meetings between them this season.
Edmonton is 9-8-4 to start the year and fifth in the Pacific Division. They come into this game off a loss on Monday to the Sabres by a score of 5-1. The Oilers are 4-4-2 in their last ten games and 4-7-2 on the road.
This team just seems to start the year off slow as they did the same the last two seasons. But where did they end up the past two seasons? Yeah…exactly. We’ll not look too deep into their record as it’s still early in the season.
The dangerous offense returns this season. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are off to hot starts already. McDavid leads the way with 9 goals and 21 assists. The team could use some more action from guys like Adam Henrique and Andrew Mangiapane, who were brought in to add to the offense.
Goaltending could be a little better as they’ve been leaky. Stuart Skinner is expected to get the start tonight. He is 7-5-3 this season with a 2.86 GAA and a .889 save percentage.

Washington tries to make it two in a row tonight at home

Washington Capitals players celebrate together after scoring a goal vs. the Oilers last year.
The Capitals are 9-8-2 this season and are last in the Metro Division. They come into this game off a win over the Kings on Monday night. Washington is 3-5-2 in their last ten games and 5-4-1 at home this year.
Although they’re last in the division, fourth see is one game away, so plenty of time. They are having trouble finding the back of the net, as well as shooting the puck on net. Washington ranks in the bottom of the league for both shooting percentage and power play conversion.
Defense has been pretty good for Washington. They rank third in goals allowed and eleventh in shots on goal allowed per game. The Capitals commit about five penalties per game and only kill off about 73% of them.
In net, we are expected to see Logan Thompson. He is 7-5-1 this season with a 1.85 GAA and a .925 save percentage. Thompson has lost three of his last four starts, so looking for a bounce back here. Let’s check out the odds and get into the Oilers vs. Capitals picks.

I like the Oilers in this one. Their offense is so action packed that it’ll be a huge test for Thompson. With the Capitals averaging five penalties a game, it gives the Oilers ripping power play chances to bang one in. Edmonton has the third best power play in the league.
If Skinner can stand tall with the defense keeping the shot count down, it’s exactly what the Oilers need. It’s a little bit of a formula that needs to happen, but Edmonton is the smarter team here. It should be a low scoring game as well, maybe a 2-1 or 3-0 game.
The first play I like is for Connor McDavid to get 2 or more points. It should come out around -110 or so and only that low because he’s coming off a miss. He had hit in his two previous games and three out of his last five games. McDavid has 21 assists already, so we could hit without him even scoring.
And give me Alex Ovechkin to score a goal for +180. He has a goal in each of his last two games and three out of his last four games. Ovi’s last game vs. the Oilers last year he had a hat trick, so never count the leagues greatest scorer ever out.
