It’s the first game in the battle of Florida where champions are made. The Tampa Bay Lightning will take on the two-time defending champs, the Florida Panthers. This is the first of four meetings between the two this year.
Florida is 9-7-1 to start the year and fifth in the Atlantic Division. They come into this game on a two-game winning streak after a win over the Capitals on Thursday night. The Panthers are 6-3-1 in their last ten games and are 6-1-1 at home.
The team has performed well at home and struggles on the road. They’re doing pretty good hanging around without two-star players, Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov, out with injuries. The offense is ranking in the middle of the league for shots on goal per game and power play conversion, but they could use some more goals.
Defense has been held down pretty well. They rank twelfth in goals allowed and fifth in shots on goal allowed per game. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky is slated to get the start. He’s 8-4-0 this season with a 2.68 GAA and a .893 save percentage.

Tampa tries to get back to the top of standings after shaky start

Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy warms up before a game.
The Lightning are 8-6-2 this season and are sixth in the Atlantic Division. They come into this game off a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday by a score of 7-3. Tampa is 7-3-0 in their last ten games and 4-2-2 on the road this year.
Last game wasn’t ideal for the Lightning with Vasi allowing five goals and getting pulled. They kept up in the first period, but the Rangers ran with it from there. Sad part is, Tampa completely out shot New York, but couldn’t stop their offense.
Tampa’s offense is ranking toward the bottom of the league so far. They rank seventeenth in goals scored but twenty fifth in shots on goal per game. The Lightning were known for a deadly power play, but are struggling so far, ranking twenty fourth in the league.
Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy is expected to play. He is 5-5-2 this season with a 2.92 GAA and a .896 save percentage. Vasi is definitely still settling in, and this offense should put him on his toes. Let’s check out the odds and get into the Lightning vs. Panthers picks.

I’m going with the home team here at a playable number. They look good these last two games and have been fantastic at home. This will definitely be a test as you can’t sleep on Tampa, but I do think they take this one.
Both teams are missing key players, but the Panthers have been more successful with their current squad. They’re not the two-time defending champs for no reason as well. This team has grit and are tough, finding ways to win games. They also have a pretty good goalie backing them up.
I like Brad Marchand to stay hot and be heavily involved. He just recorded his 1000th point last game and has a good history vs. the Lightning, scoring a goal in his last two regular season games, so we’re taking him to score for +190. Marchand has been leading this team and has 11 goals on the season and six goals in his last six games.
Another play I like is Nikita Kucherov to have 4 or more shots on goal for +122. He plays well vs. Florida and hit in his last two out of three games last season. Kuch is due for a good game, and I think this rivalry is a good place to bounce back.
