A matchup between two cross town rivals unfolds in the Metro Division. The New York Islanders will take on the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. This is the first of four meetings between the two this year.
The Islanders are 6-6-2 to start the season and 8th in the Metro Division. They come into this game off a bad loss last night vs. the Wild. New York is 5-3-2 in their last ten games and 2-3-1 on the road. Their divisional record is also 2-3-1 as well.
This team is still settling in and embracing the emergence of rookie Matthew Schaefer. It will be the first time he experiences an Islanders vs. Rangers matchup, so it’s a big game for him. The atmosphere will be absolutely electric.
Offense has been a little better this year for the Islanders, but they’re struggling on defense. They’re in the bottom of the league for goals allowed and penalties committed per game. With an average penalty kill, they need to play smart hockey and stay out of the box.
Goalie Ilya Sorokin will get the start tonight. He’s off to a rough start with a 3-4-2 record. Sorokin has a 3.33 GAA and a .879 save percentage. He has had it rough vs. the Rangers, going 0-4-1 in his last five starts vs. them.

Rangers look to build off nice win Friday night over the Wings

The Rangers are 7-6-2 to start and 5th in the division. They come into this game off a nice win last night over the Red Wings. New York is 5-3-2 in their last ten games and 0-5-1 at home this season.
It was a rough start for the Rangers, getting shutout in their first three home games. They’re still looking for that first home win and tonight would be a good time. This team seems to own Sorokin which could be the X factor to getting that first home win.
New York returns pretty much the same team as last year, less long time Ranger Chris Kreider. Kreider was sent to the Ducks where he now plays alongside former NY teammate Jacob Trouba. Their offense has been struggling to score this season, ranking in the bottom of the league.
Defensively, they have been played well. They lead the league in goals allowed per game and tenth in shots on goal allowed per game. The Rangers also rank in the top ten for penalty kill and third best for penalties committed.

I’m taking the under in this one. Shesterkin has been an absolute menace to the Islanders, and this is a great game for him to get a win after losing his last start. I think Sorokin can hold up to cover this under as well with how poorly the Rangers are scoring.
The combined GAA of the two goalies puts the total over, but the Rangers struggles scoring will play a factor. I could see a final score of 2-1 or 3-1. Now who wins, eh – I unfortunately lean with New York….gotcha (lol). It’s the Rangers I think.
We’re going to take Igor Shesterkin to get over his saves line. It should come out around 26-28 saves and with the Islanders averaging 30 shots per game, I see them putting up at least 30. It’s going to be a typical Islanders game where they control the offense but can’t score vs. Shesterkin.
