There’s a battle in the Metro Division and we’re on top of it. The New York Islanders will take on the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. This is the first of four meetings between the two teams this season.
New Jersey is 11-4-0 to start of the year and are first in the Metro Division. They come into this game on a two-game winning streak after a win over the Penguins on Saturday. The Devils are 7-3-0 in their last ten games and a perfect 7-0-0 at home so far.
Offense has been playing well for New Jersey. They rank seventh in goals scored and fifteenth in shots on goal per game but finding ways to win. Their power play ranks sixth in the league, and they rank tenth in shooting percentage.
Now on defense, it’s much of the same. Playing well, not perfect, but holding it down. Ranking tenth in goals allowed and seventeenth in shots on goal allowed per game is decent. The Devils have the sixth best penalty kill in the league, so they’re good on special teams.
Goaltender Jacob Markstrom is expected to start. He is 4-2-0 this season with a 3.95 GAA and a .871 save percentage. Markstrom is playing second to starter Jake Allen for the time being and doing his part.

New York comes in off big win over Rangers at Madison Square Garden

Islanders forward Mat Barzal high fives his teammates on the bench after scoring a goal.
The Islanders are 7-6-2 this season and fifth in the Metro Division. They come into this game off a big win over the Rangers on Saturday by a final score of 5-0. New York is 5-3-2 in their last ten games and 3-3-1 on the road this season.
This season has been all about rookie sensation Matthew Schaefer. The number one draft pick is living up to all the hype. Shaefer has totaled 5 goals and 6 assists to start the season, leading all rookies.
Bo Horvat has been playing great so far, leading the team with eleven goals. The rest of the squad has been producing with seven other players in double digit point totals. They even have four players with five or more goals.
In net, we should see goalie Ilya Sorokin. Sorokin is 4-4-2 so far with a 3.00 GAA and a .893 save percentage. He’s 2-1-2 in his last five start but coming off a shutout. Let’s check out the odds and get into the Islanders vs. Devils picks.

I’m going with a total here and I think we see it go under. The Islanders are coming off scoring five goals, so they’re due for a low scoring game. On the other side, the Devils only just scored two goals and should get a few by Sorokin. We should be looking at a four or five goal total.
Both teams coming off wins is nice for a hopeful good matchup. New Jersey will look to keep their perfect home record alive…and I think they do. This should be a win for the Devils with the way they’ve been playing and experience vs. the Islanders.
I like for Sorokin to see over 30 shots in this game. His saves line should come out around 28 saves, and I think he clears that for us. We should get around -125 value as well, so it’s a playable number.
Give me Jack Hughes to score a goal. The kid always seems to have the Islanders number and has six goals in his last five games vs. them. History is on our side for this plus money play.
