The Edmonton Oilers won both contests at home and now hold a 3-1 lead going into Game 5 tonight against the Dallas Stars. We are back in Texas as the hosts look to win this game, extend this series, and keep their season alive. However, the Oilers are red hot and showing little sign of slowing down.
After melting down in the final period of Game 1, allowing the Stars to win that frame 5-0, the Oilers have dominated the rest of the series. In the past three games, Edmonton is outscoring Dallas 13-2, including shutting them out on the road in Game 2, 3-0. Since allowing the Stars to convert on 3/4 power plays in the first meeting, they’ve killed off 7/8 penalties in the past three games.
Dallas was able to contain the Oilers, holding them to just 25+ shots twice and under 30 in the first three contests, however Edmonton broke loose last match, outshooting the Stars 33-29. Can Dallas rally at home for a much needed win? Or will the Oilers end things tonight and set up a rematch of last season’s Stanley Cup Finals?

The Stars have one thing going their way tonight, they’re playing at home. But ultimately, that’s it. Jake Oettinger is allowing four goals per game this series on just over 27 SOGs. As for Stuart Skinner, his early postseason slip ups seem to be behind him, as he is stopping over 93% of shots coming his way in these four games.
Historically, he continues to get better later in the series, and tonight I think Dallas tries really hard to control the pace.

We only saw 55 and 50 total SOGs in both matchups in Dallas earlier this series. The teams combined for just 55 SOGs in the one regular season matchup in Dallas as well. At home, the Stars are very good at playing their game and forcing their opponent to revert to their pace. This is a tough task against a team like Edmonton, but I see the Stars focusing on defense heavily.
Edmonton has scored on a power play in every single matchup, which makes sense considering they have McDavid, Draisaitl, Kane, Hyman, and Bouchard skating together when those opportunities arise. Something needs to change for the Stars, and I think they’ll be very focused on slowing down the Oilers’ skaters, limiting penalties, and getting their bodies in front of shots.
Oettinger has had a save percentage lower than 90% in both games at home against the Oilers. But overall this postseason, he has a 2.72 GAA and a save percentage of .908. And at home, those numbers improve to 2.33 and .916. The man is more comfortable at home.
With their skates against the wall, look for the Stars to continue to play their game, slowing things down and trying to keep this game low scoring.
