New Jersey Devils vs Carolina Hurricanes: NHL Best Bets (4/22)

Taylor Hall and the Canes host the New Jersey Devils

We are back in Raleigh for Game 2 as the Carolina Hurricanes host the New Jersey Devils once again. The Canes started off the playoffs red hot with a Game 1 win at home and are looking to build a nice 2-0 series lead before heading to New Jersey. The Devils did not put up much of a fight on Sunday afternoon, can they rally to even up the series?

Game 1 was utter domination from the hosts. Carolina jumped out to a one goal lead less than two and a half minutes into the game. Eventually they built their lead to 3-0 in the middle of the 2nd period before the Devils cut it back to two just before the final break. The two teams played nearly a scoreless third before Andrei Svenchnikov found an empty net to seal the win, 4-1.

The game was incredibly lopsided on the stat sheet where it mattered. The Hurricanes outshot their visitors 45-24, and took advantage of one of their three power play opportunities. However the Devils won 60% of the faceoffs but couldn’t quite turn it into offense. Will that change tonight?

Despite facing 44 shots, Devils goaltender, Jacob Markstrom had 41 saves, stopping over 93.2% of shots faced. The Hurricanes are not shy at letting it fly on frame, and tonight I think Markstrom will have to earn his paycheck once again.

A little two team parlay for the kiddos this evening. As you can see, I like the Canes to win, but I think they absolutely pepper the net and make Markstrom work, just like he had to in Game 1. Let’s look at some numbers.

In five games this year against New Jersey, Carolina has absolutely ripped the puck. Over the course of the season they average 26.4 shots on goal per game, but against the Devils, that average jumps to 34 SOGs per game, including 39 over their last three meetings. The Canes have put 45, 41, 31, 22 & 31 shots on goal against the Devils this season. Markstrom has faced them four times, clearing 26+ saves in 3/4 games, averaging 29.25 per game. He’s been a big reason as to why the Devils won two games against Carolina this season.

I trust Markstrom to show up. The dude only let in three goals after facing 44 shots in Game 1. He played absolutely out of his mind, he just didn’t get any support from the Devils’ attack. Now, Carolina has really been letting it fly, shooting over their season shot total in 11 straight games, averaging 33 shots on goal in that stretch. Tonight at home, I see them peppering the net enough to not only win the game, but also to get Markstrom over his saves total for us.
