After an incredible comeback victory in Game 4, the Oilers tied things up and were headed home. I certainly thought they had more of the momentum on their side. However, that was not the case. The Panthers quickly broke out to a 2-0 lead after the first period, holding it through a scoreless second.
Finally, the Panthers extended their lead to 4-1 about midway through the final frame, before both teams scored again, ending the contest at 5-2. Now the Panthers get to go right back home and potentially win a second straight Stanley Cup on their home ice.

We have not had a game go under yet this series. Does that start tonight? Possibly, but I’m not going to dabble. Instead, I’ve got my eyes on the Ice Cats finishing things off at home, and repeating as Stanley Cup Champions.

The Oilers are done. They had all the momentum going into Game 5, and they forgot to show up. Florida dominated the Oilers on the road and now get to face them back at home with just one win standing between them and a second straight Stanley Cup.
Let’s look at this series as a whole. Game 1 and Game 2 both were settled in overtime with the teams splitting wins. Game 3 was dominated by the Panthers, and I mean dominated. They took down the Oilers 6-1 at home, and looked as if they were playing a completely different sport. They were up big in the next game as well, but melted down in the third period. However, Florida rallied to force OT, only to lose. But then they bounced back on the road, beating the Oilers in dramatic fashion.
What’s my point? Florida has shown up and been competitive in all five games of this series so far. Edmonton has not. They’ve really only competed for 2.5 of the five contests already, and even with their skates against the wall, I don’t see them rallying.
The Oilers are all going to turn to 29 and 97 to get the job done tonight, but I think that task is a bit too tall for the two of them. They’ll need more help from their other skaters, and I’m not sure the rest of the team is built for this moment. If McDavid can step up and beat Florida singlehandedly, I’ll tip my cap to him.
But I think the Panthers get this done tonight, and I’ll be on them to do so with at least one empty netter.
