Analysis & Breakdown

Micah Parsons

Green Machine

The Packers are 6-3-1 this year, losses to the Panthers, Browns and Eagles. In the Packers three losses this year, they’ve given up a combined 39 points. Across all three losses, the defense has given up no more than 16 points. Green Bay ranks 7th in points allowed, 7th in opponent rush yards, 10th in opponent pass yards and 6th in opponent touchdowns scored.

Offensively is where we’ve seen the issues arise. The Packers rank 13th in points, 12th in first downs, 11th in pass yards and have done a great job of taking care of the ball. So what’s the problem? Conservative and predictive play calling.

The Packers rank 24th this year in pass play percentage, passing on just 54% of their offensive snaps this year. It’s more problematic because their run game ranks 19th in the NFL, averaging just 4.1 yards per carry (23rd) and bottom 10 in explosive run rate.

Jordan Love’s looked great this year. Despite passing at the 8th lowest rate in the NFL, Love’s 10th in pass yards, 10th in completion percentage, 6th in yards per attempt, 6th in passer rating and has the third highest passer grade through 11 weeks. He’s completing 67.7% of his passes, averaging 242.1 pass yards per game and has 15 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions.

Lastly, we can’t forget about Christian Watson and how good he’s been since returning from his achilles tear. Watson’s played just four games, limited snaps in his first two; but he still has 12 catches for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Both touchdowns came in the Packers’ most recent game, both crucial toward helping Green Bay secure their sixth win of the year.

‘NINE’

The Minnesota Vikings enter Week 12 after a rough outing against the Bears last week. The Vikings looked out of sorts for most of the game, J.J. McCarthy completed just 50% of his passes, threw two interceptions and the team was down 16-3 entering the fourth quarter. Somehow after three quarters of struggling to just move the ball, the Vikings scored two touchdowns and it looked like McCarthy was on his way to his third NFL win.

Instead the Bears would return the ball 56 yards on the ensuing kick off and start their drive from the Vikings’ 40-yard line. It took them three plays to get into position for a 33-yard Cairos Santos game winning field goal and Vikings’ fans went home upset.

McCarthy’s struggled so far to start his career. He’s completing just 52.9% of his passes, averaging 168.4 yards per game and he’s thrown more interceptions (8) than he has touchdowns (6). McCarthy’s playing with two great wideouts in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, but he just can’t get them the ball. Addison finished with 7 targets last week, just 2 catches and an unreal 144 air yards.

If you go back to the game before, both Addison and Jettas combind for just 72 yards; despite finishing the game with 336 air yards. Minnesota’s leaving a ton out on the field with McCarthy under center and it’ll be something they need to figure out.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Jordan Love

Unfortunately it’s no longer plus money, but at this price I’m still all the way in on Jordan Love. This week the Packers will play just their 2nd divisional game of the year, their first coming in Week 1 against the Lions. The Packers are currently 2nd in the NFC North, one game behind the Bears and will be looking to maintain a flawless divisional record.

The Vikings defense has been great this year, 16th in points allowed but 7th in opponent pass yards and 11th in passing touchdowns allowed. The problem with Minnesota has been their propensity to give up explosive plays. Due to the high frequency and variety of blitz packages the Vikings bring, it leaves them open to big plays.

Jordan Love’s also handled these Flores blitz packages really, historically. Love’s completed 66% of his passes with a 93.6 passer rating, throwing five touchdowns to two interceptions against the blitz. Overall, Love’s averaging 264.8 yards per game in these games with 9 total passing touchdowns.

Lastly, it’s Toyotathon baby.
