Will the Chiefs and Eagles Have Another High-Scoring Thriller?

When the two teams met in Super Bowl 57 two years ago, they played out the third highest-scoring game in Super Bowl history as the Chiefs edged the Eagles 38-35 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

That night, over bettors would have been elated, especially as the over hit with 12 minutes still on the clock. While Super Bowl spread bettors had a dramatic finish to sweat out, total bettors had no such stress thanks to the fireworks show put on by the championship game combatants.

Success has been otherwise absent for over bettors in recent years, however. In the last six editions of the Super Bowl, that is the only instance of the game going over.

Will recent trends win out at Caesars Superdome on Sunday, February 9? Or will the Eagles do their part to shake up the Super Bowl record book again for a third straight appearance?

Seven years ago, Philadelphia and New England combined for the second most points in Super Bowl history in the Eagles’ 41-33 win in Super Bowl LII, and in each of the Eagles’ last two appearances, Super Bowl records have been set for the most points by a losing team.

Based on those results and with both the Eagles (55 points in the NFC Championship Game against the Commanders) and Chiefs (32 points in the AFC Championship Game against the Bills) both lit up the scoreboard to get to this point, betting on Super Bowl 59 over/under odds is sure to attract a lot of over bets.

Super Bowl Over/Under History

In the first Super Bowl, there was no posted total. But based on the fact that only one total was no more than 43 in any of the first 15 Super Bowls, we can call Green Bay’s 35-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I an over in spirit.

After a win for the over in the Packers’ 33-14 win over the Raiders in Super Bowl II the next year, unders dominated for the next decade.

It wasn’t until the late 1970s and early 1980s that there was an uptick in scoring. And with it came a rise in Super Bowl betting totals.

Since a run of 12 consecutive totals under 40 from Super Bowl IV to Super Bowl XV, the Super Bowl over/under has been below 40 only four times in over four decades.

All-Time Super Bowl Over/Under History

  • Super Bowl Over/Under History: 28-29-0
  • Longest Over Streak: Four (Super Bowl XIX to Super Bowl XXII)
  • Longest Under Streak: Seven (Super Bowl III to Super Bowl IX)
  • Highest Super Bowl Betting Total: 57.5 (Super Bowl LIII, 2019)
  • Lowest Super Bowl Betting Total: 33 (Super Bowl VII, Super Bowl VIII & Super Bowl IX)
  • Highest Super Bowl Game Total: 75 (Super Bowl XXIX – San Francisco 49ers 49, San Diego Chargers 26)
  • Lowest Super Bowl Game Total: 16 (Super Bowl LIII – New England Patriots 13, Los Angeles Rams 3)

Recent Super Bowl Over/Under Results

2024 (SBLVIII) – San Francisco 49ers vs Kansas City Chiefs

Total: 47.5

Final Score: Chiefs 25, 49ers 22 (OT)

Super Bowl LVIII Over/Under Result: Under 47.5

For many bettors, even Mecole Hardman’s game-winning touchdown in overtime wasn’t enough to get a winning result on the over.

However, Hardman’s championship clincher was huge for Super Bowl over/under bettors who either had better timing or bet on an alternate total. Hardman’s score resulted in a push for over 47 bets and an unexpected win for any bets that were made on the game going over 46.5 points.

2023 (SBLVII) – Kansas City Chiefs vs Philadelphia Eagles

Total: 50.5

Final Score: Chiefs 38, Eagles 35

Super Bowl LVII Over/Under Result: Over 50.5

With 12:04 left in the fourth quarter, the over hit when Kadarius Toney scored on a five-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to put the Chiefs ahead 28-27, their first lead of the game.

The Chiefs had a chance to make it the highest-scoring Super Bowl ever, but instead of opting to try to score a touchdown on their final drive, K.C. instead set up Harrison Butker for a go-ahead kick, which he nailed from 27 yards out with eight seconds remaining.

2022 (SBLVI) – Los Angeles Rams vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Total: 49.5

Final Score: Rams 23, Bengals 20

Super Bowl LVI Over/Under Result: UNDER 49.5

With just under six minutes left in the third quarter, over bettors might have been feeling rather hopeful, as the Bengals held a 20-16 lead over the Rams.

But from that point, there would be only one scoring play, which was Matthew Stafford’s decisive touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter.

2021 (SBLV) – Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Total: O/U 56

Final Score: Bucs 31, Chiefs 9

Super Bowl LV Over/Under Result: Under 56

Entering Super Bowl LV, the Chiefs had scored 31+ points in six of seven playoff games with Mahomes. But Tampa Bay’s defense kept Mahomes and Kansas City’s offense out of the end zone all night, which was the first time that had occurred in his NFL career.

As a result, this game finished far short of its total.

2020 (SBLIV) – San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Total: O/U 54.5

Final Score: Chiefs 31, 49ers 20

Super Bowl LIV Over/Under Result: UNDER 54.5

Super Bowl LIV came far closer to hitting its total than Super Bowl LIII did, but it was on its way to being a fairly low-scoring game. But trailing 20-10 in the fourth quarter, Mahomes and the Chiefs scored three straight touchdowns over a five-minute period to rally and seal their first championship in 50 years.

Unfortunately for over bettors, the Super Bowl over/under still fell short of the over.

Super Bowl Over/Under Trends

Super Bowl XLVIII Seattle Seahawks Denver Broncos

After opening at 49.5, Super Bowl matchup odds now have the total at 48.5.

The odds may change more before kickoff Sunday evening, but if the number remains at 48.5, it will be 20th time that the Super Bowl total has been between 45 and 49.

In the previous 19 instances, the over is 11-8-0, with last year’s under breaking a run of six straight overs for totals of 45 to 49.

Currently, Super Bowl 59 spread odds give the Chiefs a slight edge. If they close as favorites, it will be the 29th time since the AFL-NFL merger that the AFC champs were favored. In the first 28 instances, there’s an even 14-14 split between overs and unders, but the under has a 3-1 edge the four most recent times.
