So, what do we got?
The New Orleans Saints just aren’t a good football team right now. The team’s not only without Alvin Kamara this week, but Chris Olave’s been dealing with back issues this week and their QB situation hasn’t gotten any better. Tyler Shough will get the start once again for the Saints, winning one of his first three starts.
Shough’s averaging 233.7 pass yards per game in his three starts with 3 touchdown passes and 2 interceptions. He’s completing 68% of his passes but for an average of just 7.5 yards per completion. The offense has struggled, averaging just 12.3 points per game in these three games. Defensively, it doesn’t get any better. The Saints rank 22nd in points allowed and haven’t done a good job of generating pressure.
New Orleans has allowed 23 or more points in five of their last six games and it’s becoming a bit of a theme. The offense struggles to gain momentum and sustain drives, leading to their defense being on the field a lot more than others. The Saints are in ‘experiment’ mode and you can’t blame them. The team’s bad and it’s time to look toward the future.
Gettin’ Spicy in South Beach
The Miami Dolphins have won back to back games for the first time all year and unfortunately it might just be too late. Miami beat the Bills by double digits just two weeks ago and followed that up with a narrow win over the Washington Commanders. The team’s been terrible this year but De’Von Achane has been outstanding. These last two wins have been on the back of the young speedster.
Achane’s got 390 yards from scrimmage in the team’s last two games, 294 on the ground and 96 through the air. He’s carried the ball 43 times, averaged 6.8 yards per carry and caught all 11 of his 11 targets. Achane’s touched the ball a total of 54 times in the team’s last two games and he’s averaging 7.2 yards per TOUCH. In that span of two games, no one has touched ball more than De’Von Achane.
Defensively, Miami’s been bad. They rank 21st in points allowed, 24th in opponent third down conversion rate, 27th in opponent yards per play and 29th in opponent rush yards per game. The team is 23rd in sacks, 28th in QB hits and bottom five in pressure rate. Shouh’s been significantly better when he’s got time in the pocket so the Dolphins will need to generate some pressure and make the rookie uncomfortable.
Sunday’s Best Bet
Devin Neal o61.5 Rush + Receiving Yards (-111) | BetOnline
After injuries to both Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller, Neal will enter this week’s matchup as the top dog in this Saints’ backfield. Neal was drafted with the Saints’ sixth round pick this year and I don’t think anyone expected to him start any games for the Saints this year, let alone dominant backfield touches.
After Kamara was hurt last week against the Falcons, Neal dominated touches for the Saints. He had 7 carries out of the backfield for just 18 yards but also caught 5 of his 7 targets for 43 yards and impacted the game through the air. Neal set records for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns as a Kansas Jayhawk. He finished with over 1,000 yards in each of his three years and solidified himself as a dual threat back with 77 catches for 777 yards across the three years.
Neal was on the field for 74% of the team’s offensive snaps against Atlanta and this week he faces a Miami defense that has struggled to catch opposing backs. Miami ranks 28th in rush yards allowed to RBs and 27th in receiving yards allowed to the position. The Dolphins have let 10 of 11 opposing RB1s clear this line, with all 10 RBs finishing with over 75 rush/receiving yards.
Neal’s got a unique opportunity this week and he’s got the best matchup possible to capitalize on it. I’m expecting 80+ yards from scrimmage and for the kid to score his first career touchdown.
